It wasn’t long ago that many privateer racers used one set of wheels for training, and the good set of wheels for racing. That meant if they used a hub mounted power meter like the Saris PowerTap, they were usually investing in more than one hub, which can get expensive in a hurry. Now, PowerTap feels that those days are over, especially with the introduction of their new AMP collection of wheels which offer the aero performance of deep carbon wheels in a affordable and durable package.
Regardless of how you view the race day/training day wheel question, the PowerTap AMP wheels are definitely worth a look for their value alone…
Sold in two rim depths, AMP wheels are available with 35mm and 50mm deep full carbon rims with a carbon braking surface. PowerTap doesn’t come right out and say it, but given the fact that the braking surface for the AMPs is called CTg, it’s possible the hoops are sourced from Reynolds due to their CTg braking technology. Both the 35 and the 50 rims measure 24.5mm externally and 17mm internally for a modern rim profile. Sold individually, or in 3 different wheelsets (35/35, 50/50, and 35/50), each wheel set is laced to a PowerTap G3 rear hub and a PowerTap branded front hub with ABEC 5 bearings. Like all the PowerTap hubs, the G3 provides power measurements with in +/- 1.5% and is compatible with any ANT+ head unit. Finally, DT Swiss AeroComp spokes laced radially front, and 2X rear hold things together and the brass nipples add to the every day durability.
Each wheelset retails for $2,199.99 and includes skewers, rim tape, and CTg brake pads as well as PowerTap’s 2 year world wide warranty.
