ProTaper have polished up a 31.8mm Team mountain bike stem, an item that will no doubt add a touch of class to most cockpits. It joins a lineup of racing-oriented carbon and aluminium handlebars, stems and grips for XC, Enduro and DH applications, from the Hayes Bicycle owned-brand.

ProTaper Team Polished Stem

Originally known as Answer, Hayes Bicycle made the decision to drop that branding in favor of the ProTaper branding back in 2018. ProTaper componentry still retains the original design philosophy it started out with during the 90s; their handlebars feature additional material at the clamping region that then tapers out to the grips for a strong, light, and compliant bar.

Clamping onto that robust central region, ProTaper have a selection of mountain bike stems that cover everything from XC and Enduro, to DH with a direct-mount stem. The ProTaper Team Stem is a 3D forged and machined 6061 alloy component available in 31.8mm and 35mm clamp options.

On the surface, a stem may look simple, but under that machined veneer lies hours of 3D modeling, countless FEA revisions, and tons of real-world ride testing. ProTaper say this ensures the final product is a light, stiff stem that can handle tremendous forces from every conceivable angle.

ProTaper offer the Team MTB Stem in 30mm, 35mm, 40mm, 45mm and 50mm reach options, covering the needs of almost all modern trail and enduro mountain bike frames. The claimed weight for a 31.8mm clamp 30mm reach stem is 175g, with A2 stainless steel bolts clamping it to the steerer and handlebar.

The new ProTaper Polished Team Stem retails at $99.99 and is available now, direct from the ProTaper website.

I’m not sure what the confusion is here. It comes in a polished finish. It installs on your bike’s cockpit. It enhances the aesthetic of your bike, thus, it polishes it. Was there some sort of assumed innuendo on your part? Because I can assure you you’re the only person thinking that.

Yes, it’s totally their fault for interpreting sexual innuendo as sexual innuendo.

“…their handlebars feature additional material at the clamping region that then tapers out to the grips for a strong, light, and compliant bar”. Is this not what every other mtb bar does? Maybe there are varying degrees of “strong”, “light”, and “compliant”, but hardly seems like a differentiating factor.

Now days, yes, but the Pro Taper profile patent that was originally under the Answer moniker was the first bar to to do this. Why they never enforced the patent is beyond me. Pretty much every company ripped it off.

I wonder why when they changed the name of the brand they decided that aesthetics in both design function and logos were no longer of any use.
