Here’s a cool use for old airline life-vests, a messenger bag! Check it out on this website (where they sell everything from wall stickers to schmuck). Interesting thing to note, the bags are printed in english, but the website is in German. The bag is 129 Euros, but I bet you could make your own by buying a used life-vest off ebay for around $40.00.
Reminds me of the time I flew Southwest from San Diego, CA to Phoenix, AZ, (over land, that’s part of the joke) and the stewardess said something like this: “In the event of a water landing, if you pull the tab and the life-vest doesn’t inflate, blow like hell into the little red tube. Once you’re in the water, remember to kick-kick, breathe, kick-kick, breathe, and rest-assured that I will be following behind you with every wine, beer, and liquor kit we have on the plane.” Southwest, gotta love ’em!
