With the addition of the Leatt Enduro, that makes two new convertible helmets this week. As Giro pointed out with their original Switchblade, the quest for a helmet that is effective as both a full face and a half shell has been going on for quite some time. The recent popularity of enduro racing has brought the need for such a helmet back to the forefront, which is why we’re seeing more and more options.

The trick to the design seems to be creating a helmet that is easy to convert while still passing various helmet standards – of which, the ASTM1952 rating seems to be the gold standard for down hill use. Leatt’s new helmet passes that standard, at least at the chin bar, though the helmet itself isn’t much different from their new All Mountain helmet…

To be offered in two completely different helmets, the 3.0 Enduro will include a removable chin bar while the 3.0 All Mountain will not. As we recently learned, full face helmets have two tests for ASTM DH rating, one for the chin bar and one for the helmet. Because of that, the Enduro chin bar is ASTM1952 rated, while the helmet is only EN 1078 and CPSC 1203 rated. Leatt points out while discussing testing standards that they are one of the only companies to actually post the full test results of each helmet directly on their site – no hiding. If you’ve ever wondered how detailed an ASTM test is, it’s worth checking out.

There is also no option to add the chin bar to the All Mountain helmet since it lacks the hardware necessary for the two quick release clips. Along with a few tabs and corresponding slots, the chinbar simply clips into the back of the helmet with two quick release cam buckles. Like their downhill helmets, both the new helmets feature dual density V-Foam which is in-molded to the shell. We’ve seen the same technology in other helmets and it claims to absorb and disperse the energy from the crash more effectively. In-molding also reduces the size of the helmet which has a greater effect on reducing impact than reducing the weight. Even so, the helmets are still claimed to be fairly light at 375g +/- 50g for the All Mountain and 700g +/-50g for the Enduro with the chin bar.

The two helmets also continue with Leatt’s Armourgel 360º Turbine bumper system which is their take on managing rotational impacts. The Turbine shapes squeeze and twist under impact and claim to help mitigate both low-g impacts as well as rotational impacts in all directions.

They need shorter mannequins. Makes all their jerseys look too short.

Any pics with an actual person wearing the helmet?

Not brave enough to actually show someone wearing it I see. Probably a good considering how that Giro Switchblade looks with the guard off. EWWW… 🙂

Regarding helmets.
There has been am interesting development in Olympic boxing and they banned helmets for men this time.
Appparently, studies have shown that boxers wearing them suffer far more from injuries than those without.

Reasons include the fact that helmet makes for a bigger target that’s easier to hit, so while some punches would just graze, helmet turns them into proper hits, impairs agility and perception and gives fake sense of security.

Considering so much money is being spent on bike gear, why are the standards so outdated and nobody is really doing anything to improve on them.

What is the link between boxing and mountain biking ? When you fall from your bike, there is an important chance that your head first hits the ground, In this situation it is absolutely mandatory to wear a Helmet, otherwise your head will just absorb alone the whole energy and will be injured! When you are boxing, there is a fair chance that you can avoid the hit from your competitor, and that if the traget surface is smaller, it will probably be more difficult to hit your head… but in case of a direct hit, the injury will probably be higher wiithout a helmet….
