Suspension stems have been around for quite some time. But, Redshift Sports approaches this piece of gear with a well-thought-out design for their version of these cockpit smoother-outers. Today they launch two new lengths of their innovative and popular ShockStop Stem, 55mm and 70mm.

A few of us around here have been enjoying the ShockStop Stem for a while. I’ve run one for almost a year, and way back in 2017, Tyler reviewed one and liked it a lot.

Modern Geo = Shorter Stems

Redshift’s new stems were designed from the ground up, yet still deliver the same performance as the existing ShockStop stems. Redshift says that these changes translate to “the ideal suspension for drop bar road or gravel bikes”.

Redshift designed these two shorter-length stems with longer top tubes and slacker head tube angles of modern gravel and road bikes in mind. According to Redshift, the 55mm stem is the first sub-70mm suspension stem to be offered – hence the completely new engineering and internals needed to make it all work at such a short length.

With modern geometry becoming standard on gravel bikes, we wanted to continue to provide the most complete suspension stem lineup in the industry. The ShockStop is the only suspension stem available in lengths shorter than 70mm,” said Scott Poff, Co-founder of Redshift Sports

Sleek Design

The minimalistic design of the Redshift ShockStop stem pairs well with the aesthetics of the newer bikes being produced. I like the minimal design features of the ShockStop Stem, it doesn’t look out of place in any bike and it does a great job of reducing rider fatigue and minimizing any hand/wrist pain.

The best part is that you can easily customize your suspension feel, to allow the stem to be as firm or as soft as you’d like. Which, in turn, will help you maintain control over the rough stuff.

To get any significant amount of vertical deflection, there must be a lot of rotation in the bars. I ride the 100 mm version of the stem, which I like a lot but I do notice the slight rotation when the stem moves up and down. Either the 55mm version only has about half the travel or it has twice the rotation – both of which would be a problem, IMO.

Absolutely love my Redshift stem on my gravel bike. I’d honestly like one on my main road bike too but it would need to be 140mm. I’d certainly buy it the second it became available if they made one.

I’ve had a 90 mm ShockStop stem since 2016. Love it. Nice to see them make it in much shorter lengths now, as 80 mm used to be the shortest they offered.
