Reynolds Assault

Hitting the market just in time for the 2012 cyclocross season, Reynolds Assault Carbon Disc wheels.  Using hubs borrowed from their mountain bike wheels Reynolds has put together an awesome carbon disc cyclocross package. Since the hubs come from the mountain bike side of the house the rear is spaced at 135mm which should work nicely with the rumored carbon disc compatible cyclocross frames that should be hitting the market this fall.

The wheels are available in either tubular or clincher and feature 24 spokes both front and rear. The wheels are built using the proven 46mm Reynolds Assault road tubular rims. Yes, that means they are a little heavier than the non disc version of this same wheel set because of the disc hubs and the inclusion of a braking surface on the rim.  However, because of this they can also be used with rim brakes. Something to consider while the cycling industry settles on standards for cross bikes.  Hubs are 6 bolt compatible and yes, they do have convertible end caps for different axel standards. However, it is not recommended to use these on a 29er due to the width of the rim. With its narrow profile it is very easy to roll a tire off the rim resulting in as you guessed it a nasty crash.  If you are worried about destroying your new investment in a race or training crash, have no fear. These wheels are eligible for the Reynolds Assurance Program, which for $250 covers the wheels for 2 years against breakage when used in their intended fashion.

Internal spokes on a cross wheel – makes sense.
Braking surfaces on a disc wheel – makes sense.
When is Reynolds going to do something useful?
