I grew up riding BMX in the urban jungle and I’ve been out for a few big street jams, but we never rolled 400 strong! My town never officially recognized BMX as much more than a nuisance, but as of 2010 Los Angeles County has held an annual BMX Day to honor the sport’s 40th anniversary.

It all began on November 14th, 1970 when SE Bikes’ founder Scott Breithaupt hosted the first competitive BMX race in Long Beach, California. Check out SE’s video for coverage of the ride and keep your eyes out for a few pro riders, weird custom bikes, tons of blinker lights and some gentle brushes with the law…

I know this is focused on urban riding and LA’s BMX history, but its sad that the greater LA area doesn’t have a bike park, yet alone the many it should have.

I think a group is pushing one near Ventura, but the area should have many, many safe areas for the young (and adults) to play around.

These guys are trying but it’s a long, long rough road. I hope they succeed. It would be great for the home of BMX! https://www.facebook.com/LABikeParks/
