Well, it looks like the minds over at Shhh Bikes didn’t take the winter off to go skiing and snowboarding. They have managed to make the single speed rear end look better while adding simplicity and stability. A unique new design that creates a different version of a sliding rear dropout which allows simple and clean chain tension adjustment. CNCd aluminum on a steel single looks cool no matter what. Aesthetics and function, isn’t that what single speeds harbor for most of us?

The rider can now more easily fix a rear flat without taking the brake off the posts and losing that perfect brake adjustment. Who among us hasn’t dreaded the rear wheel removal on a single either racing or just rolling along the trails. Seeing new designs further emphasizes and legitimizes the single speed into a model companies need to produce in order to remain current.

More photos after the break.

Not really unique or new by any means…but definitely a nice design. Salsa has been doing this for a while as well as a handful of custom builders (black cat comes to mind). Regardless is a nice looking bike…some better photos of the whole bike would be rad.

They didn’t take winter off because, well, it’s not winter in this side of the world. There were a couple of them out at the Mont 24hr last weekend and they look like a really clean, well built frame. The riders looked pretty happy on them, too, but that could have just been the beer…

I’m kind of surprised that the writer wasn’t aware of Black Cat and the other small builders who already had similar designs. But it is especially vexing that he wasn’t aware of the Salsa Mariachi and implies that he hadn’t heard of Paragon sliding dropouts either. (Note that Paragon now has a rotating dropout too). Heck, maybe I should be a bicycle journalist – are you guys actually getting paid?

Hmmm….seems everyone is ripping off Black Cat these days. Kudos Todd – you should have patented that dropout design!!!

Yeah, it does look like an overbuilt/under-engineered Salsa Alternator dropout. Oh well, the end result is better bikes for everybody… right?
