Today, Shimano introduces the latest dual-function pedal in its lineup, the PD-EH510. This versatile hybrid pedal combines Shimano’s renowned SPD clip-in system on one side with a fairly large flat pedal platform on the other. This gives riders the choice between clipped-in efficiency or the freedom of flat pedals, with a versatile pedal that’s ready to ride, no matter which shoes they choose.

Designed for riders who value adaptability across changing terrain and riding styles, the PD-EH510 is built to perform whether commuting, exploring gravel roads, or venturing off pavement for the first time.” This new dual-function pedal appears to be an upgrade over the brand’s existing EH500 model and aims to provide riders with a convenient single-pedal solution that can do it all.

Shimano PD-EH510 Details

This new hybrid pedal is designed to serve as both a flat/platform pedal and a clip-in SPD. The clip-in side features Shimano’s time-tested and impressively consistent SPD binding system. The binding clips onto the SPD cleat for an efficient and secure mechanical connection to the pedal, with adjustable release tension. A “durable resin pedal body with a textured finish” surrounds the binding mechanism. The leading and trailing edges are angled and thinned for increased pedal clearance, but there appears to be some platform on either side to interface with the soles of shoes for lateral stability.

On the other side, the durable resin body creates the flat pedal platform. With platform dimensions of 111mm x 96mm, it is roughly on par with the size of many dedicated flat pedals. The flat side also features eight back-loading pins around the perimeter of the platform to provide grip and traction for the soles of your riding shoes. That said, Shimano does not mention mountain biking anywhere in its press materials; instead, the words “exploring gravel” and “venturing off pavement” provide more insight into its intended use.

Shimano PD-EH510 Specs:

  • Hybrid SPD and platform design
  • Wide (111 mm x 96 mm) platform for improved pedaling stability
  • Eight pins on the flat side for enhanced grip and bike control
  • Resin pedal body with textured finish for improved durability
  • Thinner pedal profile for increased ground clearance
  • Durable bushing bearing construction for long-lasting performance.
  • Best Paired with SHIMANO GF, EX, and ET shoes

If you’re the type of rider who switches up your shoes/pedals depending on the ride, or you simply want a versatile pedal that allows you to choose while on the move, the new Shimano PD-EH510 looks like a solid option to consider. After all, it’s “built for riders who want one pedal that does it all, the PD-EH510 delivers SHIMANO reliability and performance in a truly versatile package, ideal for committed commuters, gravel explorers, new off-road riders, and e-bike users alike.”

I guess I just don’t get this design concept. Anyone who rides flats isn’t going to choose something that’s 1-sided, and the same for anyone who rides clips. Seems like it’s just twice as bad as both a clip and a flat.

We have these (crankbros version – doubleshot, have been out for years) on our mtbs, i ride with spd’s, my son flats. We get to swap bikes when we ride together and I can borrow his ebike without swapping pedals over.

As an older rider with trashy knees, I love this kind of pedal. It allows me to keep my left foot clipped in, and use the flat side in town where I would otherwise have to unclip every block or two, then clip in both sides when I get where I can ride more easily.
