SILCA, a brand synonymous with precision, polish, and performance, is taking its turn at reinventing the inner tube. The new SILCA Ultimate TPU Tube looks to redefine what riders expect from their spares and setups. How? Combining unpigmented thermoplastic polyurethane construction, innovative engineering, and real-world usability into one sleek, German-made package.

Lightweight, Packable, and Built for Speed

The new SILCA Ultimate tube weighs in at a claimed 45 grams for a 700×35mm size (compared to ~150g for a standard butyl tube). What is it made from? Clear, unpigmented thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). A material choice we’re seeing more and more in the resurgence of performance intertubes. Why? It avoids the structural weaknesses and higher rolling resistance often caused by colored additives. Plus, it packs down super small (see above).

The Big Question: “Will it make me faster?”

SILCA claims up to 2–4 watts saved over butyl and performance within 0.2 watts of latex. The tubes are available for road (24–43mm) and off-road (44–64mm) tires, with 50mm and 70mm valve options.

Tech Details – Silca Ultimate TPU Tube

  • Patented Mechanical Valve Bond: The TPU material is mechanically sandwiched between aluminum flanges, preventing the pump-head stress failures that plague many TPU designs.
  • Fully Threaded Aluminum Valve & Locking Nut: Ensures a solid pump connection with no valve movement or rim rub during inflation.
  • Removable Valve Core & Extender Compatibility: Ready for deep rims and aero setups.
  • Heat-Resistant Design: Optimized for high-flow electric pumps (like SILCA’s ELETTRICO) and rapid inflation, withstanding the heat that typically destroys lightweight TPU tubes.
  • Field Repair Kit Included: Each tube ships with adhesive patches and wipes, so your spare effectively becomes two spares.

Built for Modern Rides

Unlike some ultralight tubes that prioritize weight over function, SILCA’s TPU model is built for real-world use. It’s road, gravel, and MTB-ready, designed to handle the kind of abuse you’d expect on long rides or races. While it’s not a run-flat, it packs down so small and inflates so easily that it’s a natural upgrade over traditional spares.

Performance // Practicality

SILCA engineered these tubes to be compatible with modern inflation systems, including high-output pumps. The TPU’s structure allows safe, staged inflation (in 15 PSI steps), avoiding the heat stress that causes other TPU tubes to fail.

What is meant by the ‘staged inflation’ (15psi steps)?

On the YouTube video for this product, Josh Poertner says they can be inflated with portable electric inflators. He suggests inflating these Silca TPU tubes 15 psi at a time, then stopping for a bit before continuing. That way you can mitigate the heat generated by the inflator but still continue using it.

With other TPU inner tubes, they’re not supposed to be inflated directly from the portable electric inflator. This is why many of them come with a short stiff hose – it’s meant to be a thermal buffer so that the generated heat doesn’t do undue damage to the TPU material or the valve.

How many people are going to be aware of and follow that advice? Silca has hyped two unnecessary products that apparently don’t even work together.

I love some silca stuff but there’s also a lot of fluff to this cult

Well, those who don’t have their head up their a$$ will be “aware of and follow that advice.” Especially if you’re aware of TPU tubes, and paying about 40 bucks per tube.

Yea, I stopped drinking the Silca Kool-Aid last year. Most if not all of their products are readily available else where at half the price.

reading along thinking, ok, ok, sounds good
all the while, just wondering in the back of my mind what number they will pick out of the random number generator
$39 is that really for one tube

Yeah I really hate to be that guy who turns his nose up at innovation because there’s a price tag attached, but when it comes to disposable items like inner tubes, cost effectiveness is a big part of the technology. If taking the dye out really drives up costs by 8x then maybe there’s a reason the dye is there. (Speaking facetiously don’t at me)

This looks pretty great to me. As someone who uses TPI tubes on my road bike (which i use for travel quite a bit) and as spares – I’ve always worried about the flimsy/smooth/delicate plastic valves on other TPU tubes. Yeah these are expensive, but if they’re something you buy and forget about it should be worth it!

These tubes from China have already solved the issue. The cost? 1/10 of the Silca, ok maybe 1/8. Don’t pay the SilkaTax.

Yeah, but there from China. I avoid anything from China whenever possible regardless if they are cheaper.

Not same by a long shot! I have several chinese inner tubes.

Those just have plastic stems with a metal sleeve over them, so not the same thing. Probably good enough, but there are some differences. These Silca and the similarly priced Rene Herse are the only ones I’ve seen with the sandwiched attachment at the valve. Don’t see myself paying that much per tube though.

Clearly the thicker tube with metal valve stem will be more robust than 24g or even 19g ultra-lightweight TPU alternatives. And on the other hand, lightweight butyl tubes e.g. Conti Supersonic only weighed ~50g & didn’t need staged inflation!
Surprised they didn’t make the stem aero (the nut doesn’t need thread all the way round the stem) to show it’s Silca, and not just any tube with a black stem?

Never used a cigar box of Allen keys to install a tube. Must be a silca thing

I love everything about the idea, I just wish it was 2 for $39. That is an insane price to pay for inner tubes. I can catch perilli pzero tlr sale for the price of one tpu. Here is what we need, a tpu that we can inject sealant into and it plugs and the tire as well. I will pay for that.

Second mention of Rene Herse here– they have TPU tube sealant.

I find it hard to believe that color pigmentation in the TPU contributes to structural weakness and increased rolling resistance. Sounds like marketing weasel words.

German made package, the tube assembly or the cardboard box?

On a podcast (forgot which one) mentioned that the panaracer gravel kings in all the fancy colors actually degrade the rubber compound and are not at the same performance level of the black tires. So maybe there is something to it.

Pigmentation won’t enhance performance, but colo(u)ring translucent TPU must require much less than for rubber tyres?

I guess that Silca being late to the TPU tube party, couldn’t find a desirable colo(u)r, so didn’t try & went without, using printing instead.

That’s because the use of carbon black in rubber compounds for tyres was a marvelous invention and one we’ve continued to use for a 100 years because of the benefits (before that tyres were white). To have a coloured tyre you have to take out the carbon black and try to replicate its properties with something new, which is going to be very hard to do.

my somewhat educated guess is that Silca, Rene Herse and Eclipse are all made in the same German plant, with slightly different specs

Forget the Silca hype. Try these babies (Spingo). Metal valve, slightly thicker TPU, no inflator heat problems. patchable. $10 bucks each on Amazon.

Why is this news or new, Rene Herse has been selling these exact TPU tubes for almost a year now…this marketing is not entirely truthful, which is disappointing because I like Josh and most of what Silca does in terms of being innovative and ahead of the curve, and so is Jan at Rene Herse… 🙁

However, what is different is that these TPUs have a threaded valve with a washer/stopper that eliminates potential pressure/wear on the TPU when pushing down on the valve. I have tried them and I must say the ride feel is noticably improved compared to sealant.

Lol. The Rene Herse ones are just labeld Eclipse TPUs anyways.

or check Guee Aerolite tubes, have been in the market for almost 2 years https://guee-intl.com/products/aerolite-inner-tube/ look to have the same features as the Silca’s. And cost just $22

only upside vs eclipse and RH seems to be the fully threaded valve stem so that the valve can be fixed as on a tubeless setup for ease of pumping since the valve will not try to plunge inside the rim when the pump nipple is applied

Another over-priced clone of what is already readily available in the market. No thanks!
