Crank Brothers is starting up a custom pedal program at Sea Otter, letting you choose the color and spec for either the Candy or the Eggbeater models.

If you’re at the event, you’ll be able to choose the color of all of the external parts, the material of the wings (ti, stainless or chromoly), the type of sleeve that the spring rolls on and whether you want the cleat pads (AKA tread contact sleeves) or not.

The best part? There’s no upcharge. And they’ll be expanding the program into their new flagship store in Laguna Beach…

Following the show, they’ll host a grand opening of their new store at their HQ, where you’ll be able to buy custom pedals after Sea Otter comes and goes.

There are seven base colors, three spring materials, and a couple sleeve options.

Then, in the fall, the program will go live on their website for anyone not in the Orange County area.

They also have a few limited edition colors for their multitools, which your shop can order through QBP.

I wonder how much it costs to get the option that increases real-world durability…

I’m so done with their pedals. They don’t hold up worth a sh!+.

Love those pedals and now I can get rid of the dumb colors.

I have had two pairs of Crank Brothers pedals die on me in short order. No more

It’s best to think of crank bros stuff as decorations, not functional bike parts. The color options make perfect sense in that light – they’re meant for show bikes that will never be ridden, just like everything else CB has ever made.

seriously, even their multi-tools just fall apart. Eggbreakers, you look at them crosseyed.. (I can’t believe I was ever ok with having 2 sets of pedals because one was in warranty all the time).

I have owned their cobalt wheels and probably the best wheelset I have ever owned. Now if they only made fatbike version I would but it in a heartbeat. The set has never let me down through multiple 100+ mile races. Solid engagement in the hubs and I think their spoke/long nipple idea is both easy to service and stronger than normal builds.

I find many of these comments simply bizarre: I’m on my 6th set of Eggbeaters (over 12 years and roughly 28,000 miles of mountain biking), and they remain by orders of magnitude the finest, most durable pedals I’ve ever used. Yes, I’ve worn out 5 sets, but there is no other pedal that would have held up nearly as well.

Nothing bizzare about poorly manufactured/designed parts JB. I have NEVER had a pair of candies or eggbeaters last more than 9 months. CB has been fairly good about repairing them for free, but it’s a huge PITA to have 2 pairs of pedals so you have some to switch to when the others fail. I honestly think that all of my friends, myself included, have switched to the new XT pedals.

typically don’t comment, but had to add my 2cents… I have 3 pairs of eggbeaters sitting in my garage. Finally switched over completely to Shimano. After having so many problems with the eggbeaters I’ve given up. Even after having them serviced they still creak, and wear out too fast. Only time I’ll put them back on is for really muddy CX races, other than that they’re off my bikes for good. Nothing beats the Shimano pedals for CC MTB races (yes they’re heavier, but they work and don’t creak*). *My mechanic was going crazy trying to find the creak in my frame and it turned out to be the pedals… he inspected them and they simply fell a part (pedals were 45 days old).

i love the feel of their pedals.

durability lowest level.

i had eight pedals for every bike. one on bike, one carried on bike for when that one failed. four always in transit(two going, two coming) and two getting re-fixed rebuilt at shop.

i returned so many pedals they eventually just cut me off and said no more. they would not honor their return agreement so i had to start returning pedals through friends names and addresses.

make a poor product, fix it by establishing a return policy, then don’t honor it, but continue to advertise that return policy. great company….

@JB so you have used 6 pairs of CB pedals in 12 years and you still call them durable?? LOL!!

I have thesame set of Speedplay frog pedals since 1997. I am now in my 3rd pair of cleads and only replaced bearings once… That is durable. If they were shimano i wouldn’t have replaced the bearings.

Tried eggbeaters twice. Both lasted about about a month. Went back to Time ATAC pedals. Never have ever had a problem with them. I still have some sets that are over 10+ yrs old and just not enough bikes to put them on. Everytime I buy something CB I always wonder why I forgot that the stuff has the durability of an eggshell.

What are you people doing to your pedals? I have a set of the candies on my mtb, commuter and cross bike. Even the cleats aren’t as bad as most say, I’m just looking at replacing mine on my commuter after ~5000km and tonnes of walking.

I made a stringer set of Xmas decorations with my pooched eggbeaters ( 7 pair ) over the years. I finally had enough and switched over to the look s tracks and they are going into year 2 with zero issues.

I own 8+ pairs of eggbeaters and candy pedals. The plastic body, old style candy pedals were awful, but the new candy 2/3 pedals have held up for multiple seasons and still feel like new. I also get multiple seasons out of cleats.

I still have a pair of PD-M747 pedals from 98 or 99 that still function on my city bike. They were doing mountain bike duty until I bought a new bike in 2008. Since then they have done over 10k miles on just the road let alone the decade of mountain biking prior.

That’s durable.

I had egg beaters for one season. Two pairs.

I bought them in 2008 with the new bike. It now has XTs on it.

Never again will I use Egg beaters or a derivative of them.

@JB: 28000 miles divided by 6 pairs is less than 4700 miles per pair. That’s horrendous!

Much like the others, I always had at least 2 extra pairs of Egg Beaters in my rotation because I constantly had pedals going back. I used Egg Beaters from 2007-2012, I thought that was normal.

Then I got a pair of XT pedals. And rode them. And I’m still riding them. They swap from my CX bike to MTB bike, I’d guess about 5000 miles per year or so. Race, train, whatever. No issues.

I dug the feel of Egg Beaters, and of course the light weight, but if they can’t last more than a few months (one set was creaking so bad I couldn’t stand to ride them after only 80 miles, I know this because I had just finished my 4th 20 mile loop of a 100 mi MTB race) I see no reason to keep using them.

I have been running Candys on my 3 mtb’s for over 10 years and in all that time, have had 2 problems, both bearing related. Once I replaced those, they were great! As a bikepacker, I tend to be really hard on parts and I dearly love not only my pedals but my knees as well. Curiously, I have far more problems with most of my other parts than I have ever had with my pedals. Thanks Crank Bros. FYI – I’m fully convinced that most people have problems because they never grease their bearings.

Maybe I’m just pedal charmed.

No only if they would do custom colored spokes with their wheels.
