Since inception, Kappius Components’ trademark feature has been their modified SRAM domed cassettes, whether for road or mountain, to fit on their oversized freehub body mechanism. When it came to XX1, that meant cutting the arms on the largest cog and fixing it to the freehub shell, which they admit reduced its stiffness and could lead to some creaking noises.
Now, they’ve partnered with Wolf Tooth Components to create a proprietary 42T cog that’s designed specifically for their hub. This method leaves a continuous ring at the center of the cog to make it much stiffer, and it’s a direct fit for their freehub.
More pics, plus a look at other new hubs and rims, below…
The stock 42T cog has to be cut out to fit.
This one slots directly onto their freehub body.
Their new wide carbon hubs measure 46mm on the outside to give tires a bigger contact patch on the ground.
As an example, they had a Maxxis Ikon 29×2.35 that measured out to 2.44″ on these new rims. The pic above shows it compared to the same tire on an original ENVE XC rim, where it measured just 2.18″. (click to enlarge image)
To go with the whole bigger-is-better theme are their new Boost 148 hubs. The rear Boost hub adds just 20g over a standard 12×142, going from 310g to 330g. Standard 10/11speed freehubs and XD Driver Body are available. Front weight is 118g for 15×100, no mention of a Boost 110mm front yet, but it’s likely coming.
If you want to go even bigger, their new fat bike hubs are available for 190mm QR or 12×197 thru axle in the rear at 360g. Both types of freehub/driver body are available. The front is 150x15mm thru axle only, weight is 147g.
