Spanish moto brand Hebo drops into MTB with impressive helmets & gear

Hebo is a Spanish brand that started in 1993 with offroad motocross protection. In 2017, they decided to enter the cycling market, also focusing on off road. The initial collection was nothing more than open-mold designs rebranded with their logo. But with the new Origin and Genesis trail/enduro helmets, they’ve shown what they can do with their own designs. Both start off with the same deep coverage helmet, with the Origin stopping there. The Genesis adds a light duty, removable chin bar for a bit of extra protection at enduro events that require it.

Shared features include extremely deep rear coverage, cradling your head almost completely. I wore this helmet for four straight days of park and aggressive terrain riding in Les Gets, France, and it was extremely comfortable. It also stayed put, with no slipping or tilting no matter how aggressive the terrain. Temps ranged from hot and sunny to cool and breezy and it remained comfortable the entire time. Even in a brief sun shower, it stayed comfy and the pads dried quickly without squishing water down into my face.

The visor is adjustable, and there’s an integrated visor retention strap in the back.

They use a BOA dial retention mechanism, with a nice padded slide-through section in the middle so there’s no pressure points or cables digging into your skin.

What separates the Genesis is the chin bar. It clips in quickly and easily and comes out just as fast. Once installed, it’s secure, but in and of itself does not have full DH-level safety certification. Consider it a bit of extra insurance against scrapes and bruises. As such, it doesn’t add much weight.

A small button on each side of the chin bar releases it from the helmet.

Actual weight for a size medium with a few spatters of mud on it is 388g, and the chin bar is 251g. Retail is $129 (Origin) and $199 (Genesis). They’re available in different colors, and all of their helmets have color matched goggles.

Hebo Ransom & Legend full face DH helmets

Coming from moto, a proper DH-certified full face helmet isn’t much of a stretch, and they have two versions. Built on the same mold, the carbon fiber Legend comes in at €340 and the fiberglass Ransom at €220.

Both helmets offer a flexible and adjustable visor, emergency removable cheek pads, and textured goggle strap sections to keep things in place. The carbon helmet comes in at a claimed 900g for Medium, and 1,150g for the Ransom.

They also have a decent clothing collection, including tech tees. One’s a regular tech material with sublimated logos, but the Pro jersey has a mesh like material that’s ultra breathable and looks solid from the exterior, but is actually way more mesh like. It’s also incredibly soft.

The 3/4 sleeve option has an upper mesh back panel that’s more open, available in both standard and Pro materials. A winter collection includes a L/S merino jersey with windstopper winter jacket that gets two rear zip pockets. They also have shell jackets and vest in both wind- and wind/waterproof versions.

Not shown, their bibshorts get two chamois options, a softer foam one and one with a high density pad using Poron XRD, each in two lengths – a standard and 3/4 knicker lengths.

The baggy shorts get a zippered air vent on the front with waist adjustments. Coming later is a leaner version with lighter materials and vent holes front and rear, using three snap button positions to adjust the waist rather than velcro straps. It’ll be aimed at XC and gravel riders and won’t be as baggy. Women’s clothing coming soon.
