Generally when you think of a Supermoto dirt bikes come to mind. Specifically, dirt bikes with 17″ wheels, slick tires, lowered suspension, and better brakes. Just spotted on the Specialized Instagram feed looks to be their bicycle interpretation of a supermoto. Captioned simply as #Supermoto is ready for its closeup, does the teaser point to a new model from the big S?

Even if it turns out that the bike is just a concept, it’s worth a closer look.

Click to enlarge. It’s digitally blown up, so it’s a bit grainy, but it shows the details a little better. Details like what appears to be a new frame. If you look closely at the seat tube junction it doesn’t look like any frame in the current line up. Then there is the COBL GOBL-R seat post which combined with an upper chain guide (on a single speed) points to a bike that is meant to see rough stuff as well as smooth pavement – the perfect Supermoto. Finally add in what could be a Remora Aero storage unit and Fatboy slick tires and you have a bike that is equal parts beautiful and confusing.

UPDATE: This bike did appear in 2013 at Specialized headquarters so it’s not new. But does its resurgence mean something for the future?

Speaking of Supermotos, this seems like the perfect opportunity to post Skullcandy: Robbie Madison’s Drop In. Because even if it isn’t bike related, riding a supermoto down a bobsled track, then jumping a dirt bike off a ski jump is just awesome.

It looks like the Crave SL’s we set up with Electrak tyres at our shop in Manly.

So they reinvented the hybrid bike?
And why so much fork clearance?

My knees ache just looking at that gear combo. And why do I suddenly feel like brushing my teeth with MacLeans Triple Stripe toothpaste?

@JBikes:
Nope, at least hybrids are somewhat useful as they have multiple gears, rack/fender mounts and are not so expensive that you’d be afraid to leave them locked up. This thing seems to fill no purpose. Over geared for offroad use, no rack/fender mounts for around town use and flat bars that make it pretty limited for rides of any real distance. I suppose if you just want a really expensive bike to ride around the park this bike is for you. With drops it could be pretty fun for tearing up rail trails.

Sounds fun. Lay some slabs of wood on some bricks and you have yourself a race.

In recent weeks I was planning to do a similar thing : using a small Zaskar Carbon 26″ frame
that has been lying around with a 450 mm rigid carbon fork, drop bars and Schwalbe Supermoto tires. I hate those skinny tires on roadbikes

isn’t that just Eggers’ stumpy hard tail with slicks?

Massive aero stem?

They didn’t even reinvent the hybrid. Cannondale has been doing this for 15 years or so with their Bad Boy bikes.

In case you want to throw the knobbies back on your dirt bike, er, supermoto.

Nothing like a Superfly SS with slicks. Nothing.

Just looks like a SJ HT with skinny tires, aero covers on the stem and seatpost clamp, and some flashy paint. Cool for sure but not so much a new model as much as a new variant.

2013? Try 2012. Right click, google image, lots of posts in 2012. The big “S” duped many people today with that post….

would be fun to have a SS homologated road racing series… everyone shows up on equal footing for event, same gear inches, same tires, same everything.. be fun way to get more people into cycling..

First of all, Specialized isnt inventing some new genre of cycling. Second of all, comparing this to a supermoto is absolutely idiotic. Do you know that readers/intagramers are also into motorcycles, and read and ride those too? I have been riding bikes like this for years. yes carbon. yes disc. yes flat-bar.

@derkahn, that’s exactly what I’m thinking about. Parking lot races on these style bikes all across the country.

It is like my street bike! A Kona hardtail frame stripped of paint, slick tires, disk brakes, 2x 30-48 by 1136 (much better than the single speed … for a motard?) … but wait … what’s new abut it?

I have been running my On One Lurcher fully rigid with 35mm touring tyres for road rides for over a year. So this is nothing new really. Oh I can set mine up as a single speed as well as geared…..

I’ve got no attraction for singlespeed… it would be nice with a dedicated 1×5

Move along, nothing (new) to see here.

Seriously…. I mean seriously, WHY is this news. People have been doing this sorta stuff for ever…hell I rode my own incarnation of it (with 1×9) this morning.

Kona did it years ago.. with a reduced suspension coilair ( if I remember right) and slicks etc. Dude even rode it on a supermoto track and all. Surely the vid is still alive somewhere..
