Speednite is a handlebar stem with an integrated headlight, computer, and Bluetooth connectivity. What’s more, the headlight and optional taillight use motion sensing to aim the light, blink for turns, and even detect braking.

Speednite is a new startup project from Mega Unit Technology Ltd, aiming to reset the price of entry on a comprehensive lighting safety system. The main system is integrated into a 31.8mm diameter stem, with a computer and headlight burrowed inside. Motion sensing comes courtesy of a sensor that attaches to your helmet, to detect turns, head movement, and deceleration.
It’s certainly not the first time we’ve seen an attempt at turn signals, and could be a boon for night-time city commuters. The head motion sensor detects movement to automatically enable the rear turn signal and directional lasers from the front light. You can also to use the handlebar remote to manually control the functions.
The headlight puts out a quoted 800 lumens, and is driven by a 3000mAh lithium-ion battery. Run time is claimed to be up-to-30-hours on a single charge (which we imagine to be in a low-power mode).
As far as the function of Speednite as a stem, it is made for 31.8mm handlebars, with 25.4mm adapters included. They only plan to make a single length for now, at 90mm. Weight comes in at 446 grams.
Though the stem already has its own computer, the system will also be supported by an app, with features like an SOS signal to automatically call an emergency contact in the event of an accident. It will also display common metrics like speed, time, distance – and sync with Strava.
Speednite is available for pre-order now in an Indiegogo campaign, with 22 days left as of this writing. Normal MSRP will be $338, with discounts down to $129 for early backers of the project.
