sram launches auto shifting 2 speed internal geared hubs for bicyclesBike Europe is reporting that SRAM will debut a new 2-speed, auto-shifting internal gear rear hub at the Taipei show in a few days.

The new hub will shift automatically based on speed and wheel size, but SRAM’s category manager Marcus Schneider says it’s just one of several new geared hubs they’ll reveal at the show.

Schneider also revealed that we should expect to see them spec’d on quite a few 2012 bikes later this summer. They’ll be coming in all variations (freewheel, roller, disc, and coaster brakes) and with either steel or alloy hub shells.

“As the dimensions of the 2-speed hub are the same as a single speed, our initial ideas were that this is a perfect gear hub for folding bikes,” Schneider said. “However, many of our OE customers find this gear system suited for many more bike types. It’s being spec’ed for a wide range of MY 2012 models.

Bianchi used to have the Shimano Auto-D on their Milano, but not anymore. Wonder if these will sell any better.
