What is the Stinner Refugio?

The rugged climbs and winding roads of Refugio Road in Santa Barbara, CA (where Stinner calls home) inspired the Refugio name. From steep ascents to gnarly descents, this bike is ready to tackle the toughest routes confidently – plus, it looks fantastic in Lake or Trailhead colorways.

What Does Select Series Mean?

The Refugio Select is handcrafted from a blend of Columbus Zona and Life steel tubing as part of the Stinner Select Series. Each frame is fabricated, painted, and assembled in Santa Barbara, CA, underscoring Stinner’s commitment to US-made craftsmanship. The main difference here is that this is an off-the-shelf geometry for Stinner, instead of the custom geometry and options found on the aptly named Custom Series.

Steel Adventure

The Refugio Select features clearance for 50mm tires, making it an ideal choice for gravel grinders, bikepackers, and endurance cyclists. The bike is built with UDH compatibility and thoughtfully designed mounts for fenders, triple fork legs, and dynamo lights, ensuring it’s ready for multi-day adventures or spirited local rides.

Nice looking ride! Is it hampered and limited by 1x only drivetrain? Shame, you can hit some good speeds bombing down those Santa Barbara canyon roads. Looks like you would just be coasting along stuck with 1x only.

1x has come a long way in the past couple year as far as gear ranges are concerned. And in the end it all comes down to personal preference. Some people love 1x drivetrains, some people love 2x. To each their own. For someone who is dedicated to the 2x setup, this is simply not the bike for them. But given it’s a steel frame, it’s probably not anyone’s go-to race bike anyway and that’s where 2x drivetrains are more common.

E.13 offers 12-speed cassettes with a 9-45 and 9-52 ratio. 9×42 is actually a pretty high ratio, I don’t think you’d be spinning out on most descents.
