In conjunction with QBP’s newest dealer show, Biketoberfest, Surly is hoping to outfit the Trolls. No, not the internet experts, but their own Troll bicycles or any sort of city, touring, dirt bike that has clearance for monster tires but would benefit from something a little more tame in the tread department. According to Surly, the brand has a number of bikes that could benefit from large, durable tires, but at the same time will benefit from something with better rolling resistance.

Perfect for all of the Trolls, Big Dummys, and other bikes out there, the new Surly Extraterrestrial 26+ tires will have you phoning biking home with room for your beverages using their new 8 or 24 pack racks as well…

Loosely referring to it as a 26+ tire, the Extraterrestrial will be available in a 26×2.5″ casing. Designed for heavy duty off road touring, the tubeless ready tire uses a 60tpi casing with 62a rubber and a Kevlar cap under the tread for puncture protection. Intended for 24-50mm rims, the ET uses a directional tread pattern with a casing that is within a half mm of the tread width.

On the sides, Surly went with a nylon breaker for durability and drops in a little Neil Young Easter Egg if you look closely. Tires will sell for $60 and will be available soon.

Racks may not seem all that exciting, but Surly is pumped for their new 8 and 24 Pack racks. Surly has been including unique short mounts on their frames for some time but there weren’t really racks to fit them – until now. Intended as front racks, we’re told both the 8 and 24 will also work as rear racks or on bike other than Surly as well. Perfect for when you don’t need a full on touring rack, the smaller options will be welcome additions to any commuter, bar bike, pizza bike, etc.

Using the same stainless steel hardware as their other racks, the 8 and 24 Pack racks provide a lot of adjustability to fit anything except offset fat bikes. Each rack is made from 10mm chromoly steel tubing with a weight of 640g or 860g (8/24) and a platform dimension of 160x270mm and 400x270mm with retail prices of $110 and $150.

In addition to their new Wednesday fat bike model, Surly introduced a new fat bike rim to go along with it. My Other Brother Darry is available in two versions – the dual drilled, and symmetrical. The Dual rim will be stock equipment on the Wednesday while the Symmetrical will be available aftermarket. Each one is an aluminum, single wall 80mm wide rim with cutouts, while the dual gets a pinned joint and the symmetrical is welded (and a good bit lighter). By our scale, the MOBD Symmetrical is now the lightest fat bike rim in the Surly line.

For comparison, we weighed the other fat (or plus) rims on hand, each in a 26″ size.

I was considering buying these tires until I saw Cortez emblazoned on there. Now I will definitely be buying them. Amazing.

Oh for heavens sakes yes I get that there have been 29+, then 27+, but surly have outdone themselves and trolled the entire industry with a BS unnecessary 26+. Utter pointless BS. I used to have some respect for them (as of yesterday) as a “boutique” bike brand but in reality they’re just another mass produced bike company pandering to hipsters and commuters who think they’re supporting a company that has their interests at heart (BS).

Oh please… surly is the OG when it comes to “+ bikes” from long before “+ bikes” were trending. Their motto of “FFF: fatties fit fine” lead to oversized wheels and tires being stuffed into frames before it was the fashionable thing to do. So they put modern nomenclature on a classic sizzed tire, big whoop. Go regurgitate your BS elsewhere…

@Zach or any Surly PM who might be reading:

What is it exactly that makes MOBD a tubeless ready rim?
I am not trying to troll, but how can a rim, one with cut-outs mind you, be considered tubeless ready? My Ghetto tubeless works fine on my HRD’s but I am basically waiting for it to fail.

How can you sell these as ‘factory tubless ready’ when they require a duct tape hack?

thx.

@Andy – Are you seriously upset about this? I think the 29+ , 27+ tires are the joke.

I’m fine with 26+, you can’t imagine the amount of nice rims I have lying around in 26″. Then the fact that a 26 x 2.5 tire probably measures out to the same diameter as 27.5 x 2.2, so keep your old rims and upgrade to nice big tires, what’s not to like?

What’s not to like is the fact that 26 inch rims have existed as the de facto standard for 20 years, and all of a sudden they come out with a 26+ ‘standard’, riding on the wave of interest in + sized tire widths, while its clear that the industry is settled on 27.5. I really don’t see the point.

@gringo see the Surly web page http://surlybikes.com/parts/rims/my_other_brother_darryl – they’ve added a bead hook to the rim profile. Probably not a bad idea, I’ve had a ghetto tubeless tyre come off mid-descent and it was rather painful!

26+ is the worst name ever.

To elaborate, Velo Orange releases a frame that can handle 2.5″ tires on 45mm wide rims, and calls it a Piolet. There’s no stupid new buzzword attached. IMO, if your general purpose off road bike can’t take 2.5″ wide tires, it’s broken.

Folks, Surly released 26+ a year ago – this is not a new development. Furthermore – it is hardly a new standard, just a naming convention. The wider tire benefits from a wider rim. Big whup. You’ll also find that 26+ tires and rims happen to fit nicely on a 650b bike giving you more options when building up your new 27.5″ whatever.

Stop your whinging, this is what Surly does: provide options.

Surly has been making 26″ bikes with clearance for 2.5-2.7 tires for many years. Why do some people think it’s so crazy that they’re finally providing a non-downhill tire option in that width? I use my rigid Troll for mixed-terrain commuting, touring, XC, etc, and I use 2.35 Big Apples or Big Bens. This tire is really interesting for that use, and guess what – I can use it with tubes on the Salsa Gordo 26″ rims I got before “+” sizes were around.

@Andy: everybody I know who rides a Surly (largely guys I’ve worked with in shops) knows it’s a QBP brand making bikes out of basically plumbing steel in Taiwan. People buy them because the frames are cheap, durable, and versatile. This tire specifically says it will fit down to a 19mm inner rim diameter, so it isn’t imposing a new standard on anyone.

Bald Ben: 4130 isn’t exactly gas pipe. There are stiffer bikes than my old Cross-Check, but it was streets ahead of the noodly ’88 Trek 360 (True Temper Gold) I used to ride.

Surly must have been reading my diary! Been running the 26x 2.75 dirt wizards tubeless on rabbit holes for almost 2 years but sadly they do not fit any suspension fork with the right ATC for my troll. I put 2.35 bontragers on the same rim bumping up to 2.5 and they fit a suspension fork nicely.

Happy to see another 26+ option out there that will clear suspension and guess what? it fits most every other 26″ MTB with clearance for larger tires. Double win! the everyman’s plus size option without having to break the bank on expensive rims/frames/forks for the “new” 27.5 and 29 standards

bravo surly! those racks looks prime too…I was just noticing there wasn’t much out there to fit those upper mounts (without hacking something)

@Champs. I know, and my Surlys (over the years, a Karate Monkey, a Big Dummy, a Cross-Check, a Steamroller, and a Troll) have all been satisfactorily stiff. I meant that 4130 isn’t very fancy or “advanced” when compared to OX Platinum, Reynolds 531, titanium, crabon, etc., but it gets the job done at the right price.

It would be nice if the 26″ DW’s were as fat as the Knard 26×3.0. I have no desire ti run a 2.skinny that weighs as much as a fatbike tire. The Knards are as unpredictable as it gets for dirt riding and cornering if they’re aired up firm, so I’ll keep em soft and run em till another 26×3.0 120TPI choice comes available. The ET looks to be a wee bit too streety for a mountain dweller aaannnnddd it’s 2.skinny….
