The Helmet Lock Keeps Your Lid Secure

Blake Mills, an avid cyclist and entrepreneur, came up with The Helmet Lock, a simple little cable that secures your helmet to your U-lock or cable lock, saving you the hassle of having to carry it around when you park your bike.

You simply slip the big loop through a small or medium vent in your helmet, then loop it through your lock.  The rubber-coated nut holds your helmet securely.  Simple concept, solid execution.  He sent us a couple to check out and they’re very nice and very easy to use.  They’re now permanent accessories on the U-locks we use.

If you’re locking on a urban sidewalk, be wary of locking a helmet where folks might walk their dogs. I don’t know if dogs just like to relieve themselves on smelly lids or if it takes encouragement from their walkers, but it’s not uncommon. I lock with a beefy braided cable rather than a U – neither’s perfect protection – looks like it’d work with a cable just as well as a U. Seems like a good concept at a fair price.

It’s a solution in search of a problem. Run the cable or lock through the helmet straps. Works just as well and is 58 grams lighter. Once the straps are cut the helmet is useless.

Grendel, I think you are missing the point. With the Helmet lock, you don’t need to lock your helmet with a cable so you are not vulnerable to getting it cut.

I think the the HelmetLock is cool. I’ve seen them around and have been thinking about getting one. It’s a pain in the ass to carry your helmet around, particularly if you just ride around to hit the bars.

@Steve Somebody who is willing to cut the straps to make the helmet useless isn’t going to care how the helmet is locked up. They’re going to cut the straps anyway. And really, how often do you hear of that happening? I haven’t heard of an instance yet. I’ve also been paranoid about helmet pee. I never thought of dogs, which is more logical than errant bums and drunks. But still, I’ve never heard of anyone getting their helmet peed on either…

Either way I keep my helmet with me or lock up through the straps. No special tools needed.

It really all comes down to what works for you. I was never comfortable leaving my helmet by the straps, especially because they don’t even need to be cut… They aren’t really loops, they just look that way because of the plastic buckles. Just slide the buckles off the end and the helmet comes right off with them.

Anyway, my point is that I see tons of people carrying around their helmets. This provides actual security for your helmet, and that means you don’t have to carry it around anymore. Works great!

OK, Unless you are wearing a Giro Ionos or something that expensive, shelling out 13 bucks for a little cable is RIDICULOUS! First off, someone with wire cutters or dykes could cut right through that thing, and why not just put the ulock through the helmet vent as well as the frame, that is what I do. I have an OnGuard mini bulldog, and the posts from the lock fit fine through both my Bell Alchera as well as my frame usually. No one is going anywhere with my helmet in that case.

@Patrick I think it depends on what kind of lock you are using. My Ulock doesn’t leave any room between the bike and pole for a helmet to fit (if I were to put it through the vents). The helmet lock is an easy way to attach my helmet. No lock is 100% secure, they can only be deterrents. I’d rather leave my helmet behind with a deterrent than carry it around with me.
