Few bikes are as instantly recognizable as the Schwinn ‘banana seat’ bike. Ever since the Schwinn Stingray launched in 1963, the bikes have held a place in bicycle and even pop culture. In the late ’60s, Schwinn introduced the Krate bikes which at the time were the top-of-the-line Stingray models which featured bright colors that inspired the name.

When it comes to the purple Grape Krate, it seems that this color wasn’t actually offered until 1999. It was at that point that Schwinn did a limited run of 1999 bikes to celebrate the year. Prior to that, it was rumored that Schwinn may have built 15 Grape Krates and gifted them as Christmas gifts to employees in 1976, but that’s never been confirmed – even by Schwinn. There were also to Grape Krates made as samples in 1969, but again, those never made it to the public.

So if you missed picking up one of those 1999 bikes, the Grape Krate has returned once again – but this time it’s even more limited. The classic Stingray lines are still there, with a 20″ rear and 16″ front tire. There’s also a spring-loaded rear suspension for the adjustable banana seat, a springer fork, and a coaster brake at the rear with a drum brake upfront.

As part of the ongoing re-release of various Schwinn Stingray models, only 500 of the Grape Krate models will be sold. Priced at $499, all of these bikes will be available exclusively on Amazon, with Prime free delivery.

I’m holding out for the version with the 3 speed Hurst style shifter box on the top tube.

Jim E , I remember the original Schwinn Krates also had the 5 speed shifters. I asked a bike store owner why they stopped making them . He said they were out Lawed because they say they were too dangerous. Anything that was fun as a kid growing up , this new generation destroyed !
They’re worried about a shifter . You know how many times I landed on the bar ? but we survived !

I had a green stingray. 2 speed. You could hit the brake and it would shift into a lower gear. I’ve never seen another one like it

I had a green ‘68 Sing Ray Fastback with the 5 speed stick. Sure wish they’d bring that one back!

I restore the original 1968 thru 1973 Schwinn 5-Speed Krate series bicycles and nothing, and I mean nothing, compares to them. Unlike these new China made Schwinn bicycles, the originals
will always hold there value if they are taken good care of.

Have you ever had a 64-65 purple stingray with whitewalls? I would like to find one. Thanks.

I have a 1972 Orange Krate. Gears and brakes work. Cleaning it up now. Needs new tires. What might it be worth?

My parents bought me a brand new Orange Krate 5-speed in 1968 for Christmas I love that bike wrote it all over Huntington Beach until it was stolen about a year and a half later never to be seen again.

The title of this story is wrong. The original SCHWINN KRATE’s from the 1967-1971 or 1972 had 6 colors. And purple was NOT one of the colors.

Wasn’t violet a color which would’ve been purple and 67

I wanted an orange krate so bad. But. Negative. That was probably 65 or 66. Later I bought a 70 or 71. Green stingray 20 in bars. It was a 2 speed. You could hit the back break real quick and it would change to a lower gear …I’ve never seen one like it. Wish I still had. I could wheelie that bike for blocks

If there ever was perfection in a bicycle, Schwinn made it. Had a blue Schwinn Stingray Fastback (3 speed) as a kid in 1968. I loved that bike! Just looking at the new Stingray here, brings back such wonderful memories. Wish I still had my original bike.

I’d just about bet schwinn will never bring the stick shifter back just because of the ignorance of the young kids and parents of today.

Back in the 60s if you crashed your bike you were more worried about your Dad whipping your butt instead of the injuries.

Kids back in the day were tough and there wasn’t any helmets.

I had a Grape Krate, I called it that time a Purple Krate, I think it had just a 3 speed shifter, not a 5 speed. It was late 68 or early 69. I wish I had kept it. I have fond memories. My Mom worked at Montgomery Ward at the time.

I am confused about what is said about the Grape Krate & when it was sold. I’m convinced My parents gave me one (birthday or Christmas) as a kid in 1969 or 1970 (I’m 65 years old). Others say this bike wasn’t sold until the 1990s. I know I had this bike & loved it. Can anyone shed any more light on this for me?

We have an original grape karate. Fyi it’s a 5 speed. Got it way before 1999. The seat was white with purple stripes. Wish I could post a picture on here.

I know you’re absolutely right I had that same bike as a kid with the white seat with the metal flake in it , i’m not sure if it was one that came out in 1967 and was just considered a stingray but mine was a five speed and it looked exactly like the crate bikes
