Thomson refinishes stems and seat posts with limited run of ceramic coatings

Looking for something a little unique for your next cockpit? Thomson looks to be offering exactly that with their latest batch of limited edition products. Instead of the standard black or silver ano, Thomson is relying on ceramic coating to give their products a new look.

Using a Cerakote thin-film ceramic coating, Thomson’s first run of products will be in the “Jungle” color. We’re told that once Jungle is sold out, then they will be producing another limited run of “Sand”.

For stems, ceramic coated options will include the X2 and X4 in 90-120mm lengths with 31.8mm clamps.

Seat posts will also be available, though only in 27.2mm diameters of the 330mm straight Elite. To go along with the seat posts, matching seat post collars will also be offered in 29.8mm diameter. It seems that by the sizes and options available that they’re going after the “gravel” market which seems to fit.

Both the stems and the seat posts will sell for $125 each, instead of the usual $100, and the collars will sell for $39.95. Available soon.

How does the baking process affect the alloy I wonder?

It won’t affect the alloy at all. I’ve been using cerakote for a while now and it only requires a 120°C/250°F temperature in the oven.

Just because Cerakote is a gun coating originally, it doesn’t mean that it has to be in drab colors! They do other colors, too. Have had a local frame painter do several spokes in colors for wheels I’ve built up to match the client’s bikes. Stuff seems to hold up really well, even on spokes.

We stopped using Thomson seatpost collars when they switched from using bolts with a 4mm Allen head to a begging-to-round-out 3mm Allen head. Maybe those collars can put an adequate squeeze on aluminium or carbon seattube, but they fall short of the challenge with titanium seattubes.

So I guess the vaunted 25mm setback seatpost project is truly dead, now? This must be the first show season in about four years that Thomson haven’t shown a prototype of it.

I wonder if this coating is in response to their nearly always seizing posts with steel frames. The micro grooves running latitudinal on the post alloy moisture to collect and seize to the frame over time. I’ve had 2 and both times it has happened resulting in a blow torch to the seat tube to extract the post.
