Can cycling and theater come together for one great experience? Glory Ride and Delaware Theater Company thing so.

Glory Ride is the story of Tour de France champion Gino Bartali. Bartali was a legendary Italian cyclist who opposed the fascist regime of Mussolini. In a time when few spoke out against the dictator for fear of their lives, Bartali was openly critical.

Like most men his age during World War 2, Bartali received the call to serve in the Italian military. Since he was already a famous cyclist – he’d already won the Tour by then – Bartali served as a courier on, you guessed it, his bike.

But it wasn’t just military documents he delivered. With forged documents smuggled into the frame of his bike, Bartali helped save thousands of innocent lives.

Now, the musical Glory Ride tells Bartali’s story. A father-daughter duo, Victoria and Todd Buchholz, wrote Glory Ride, and Michael Bello is the Director. It hit the stage on February 25 and will run for only a few more weeks.

The remaining shows are:

  • Wednesday, March 11 at 7:00 PM
  • Thursday, March 12 at 7:00 PM
  • Friday, March 13 at 7:00 PM
  • Saturday, March 14 at 2:00 PM
  • Saturday, March 14 at 7:30 PM
  • Sunday, March 15 at 2:00 PM

Delaware Theater Company holds the performances in Wilmington, Delaware. For tickets and more information, visit delawaretheater.org.

‘Road to Valour’ is a good book too, the story of Gino Bartali’s life.

This guy is one of my heroes! He was arrogant and smug. But when someone needed to stand up in an evil time he used his arrogance and smugness to camouflage his efforts to really help people.

You don’t have to be nice to be good.

Man. I would have been honored to lend a more “period correct” bike for the production.

I saw the production last night. Overall it’s very good. I could see it making it to Broadway. The story is compelling! Most of the talent is top notch. Two small complaints. Some of the writing and jokes need to be re written and the lead girl has no chemistry with Gino the lead. Not sure if she was an understudy or they made a huge casting mistake.
