Treks’ new line of trail gear is tough, fits nicely, and has a hidden talent — it treads lighter on the planet. The new apparel is mostly mountain/fitness tech tees and shorts for men, women, and youth riders. The designs are built for durability but have an excellent softness to them, enough for the trails or the yoga studio.

The big story isn’t the gear but how it’s made. All the fabrics in the new collection are made with earth-conscious fabrics that contain recycled material. The main body fabrics on Trek mountain bike apparel carry the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® label. This label denotes the fabric was tested for harmful substances, and every piece contains fabrics crafted with a percentage of recycled plastic water bottles.

Trek’s entire spring/summer 2023 apparel collection has helped divert over 800,000 bottles from landfills (based on an average 16.9 fl. oz. PET water bottle).

Ah, more greenwashing. Let’s look at the numbers…

OkeoTex certified is 20% recycled. Trek says their new line has saved 800,000 bottles from the landfill. And a typical 500ml bottle is ~9g. That’s 7.2 tonnes saved. Pretty cool.

But also, that’s 29 tonnes of new synthetic fabric produced. Synthetic fabric that turns into micro plastics 38x faster than solid plastics do. 94% of which won’t be recycled.

So, congrats (I guess) to Trek for *only* adding 27,000,000g of micro plastics to the world with your new MTB clothing line!

Roger – one thing that’s always stressed in science to be constant units of measure. The 27,000,000g measurement you note is equivalent to 29.7 tons. Different units of measure and scales (g vs kg) can make big differences look small and small differences look big. I’m not defending or condemning the issue, but the best way to communicate an issue or problem is not to appear to be misleading or biased.

Releasing new product lines every year is obviously the most environmentally friendly thing to do. Duh.

If its made with any man-made materials, by default, its not “nature friendly”. Stop pretending recycled plastic materials are actually that much better than virgin plastics. Organic cotton, linen or hemp for plants and free-range/sustainably harvested wool, down, leather, fur for animal derived products are the only “nature friendly” materials. All these are renewable, biodegradable and have no long-term pollutants as by products. Also, many of these items outlast man-made materials as they require less washing and/or wear better.

Cotton is terrible for the environment and isn’t suitable for outdoor rec gear. “Cotton Kills”
