Bontrager has updated their Flatline MTB Shoes for flat pedal riders, improving durability, breathability, and toe protection. The shoe retains the Vibram outsole seen on previous iterations but gets a highly perforated upper that gives the shoe a polka dot aesthetic and allows the wearer’s feet to breathe.

Despite the massive increase in the use of perforations across the sides and above the toe box, the new Bontrager Flatline shoe ends up with a much more casual aesthetic thanks to the more understated colorways now available with black laces only. The only eye-catcher is the bright yellow Vibram logo at the heel, indicating the rubber compound seen at the outsole.
Underneath, the Bontrager Flatline outsole remains unchanged. In the pedal zone, Vibram rubber is shaped into a lattice of textured low-profile squares with chamfered edges, while the heel and toe regions get a deeper, more aggressive zig-zag pattern designed to enhance grip in these areas for hiking back up the trail.
Something you can’t tell from the pictures is that Bontrager has used their new InForm Performance last in the production of the new Flatline shoe. This is said to deliver a relaxed fit with a flatter foot position, perhaps better for those who dislike a high arch at the instep. Under the sole is a shock-absorbing EVA midsole said to reduce fatigue.
