Demi Vollering has a new bike to match the rainbow jersey.

Specialized has unveiled a custom 2026 World Championship S-Works Tarmac SL9 for Vollering following her win in Montréal. The paint scheme is called “Equation of Speed,” and if you’re up to date on the Specialized marketing materials for the SL9, it makes perfect sense. But this is deeper than a phrase; Specialized used the bike to show some of the work that happens before a World Championship ever reaches the finish line.

The concept comes from the way Specialized approaches race-bike development: rider, bike, and route all feed into one final number, time to finish.

For Vollering’s Tarmac, Specialized turned that process into the graphics.

The Equation of a World Champion

Specialized Concept Graphic Designer Emily Halwell worked with Lead Aerodynamicist Lionello Bardina to bring elements of the company’s engineering process into the paint scheme.

The graphics build across the frame in layers, representing the training, testing, equipment choices, simulations, and small adjustments that pile up over a season.

“Winning world championships doesn’t just happen in one big moment. It’s thousands of small decisions leading up to it,” said Halwell. “Riders spend years training, testing, and refining tiny gains, and the bike graphics reflect that.” That thinking is where the “Equation of Speed” name comes from.

Specialized describes the equation as rider + bike + route = time to finish, the same basic framework its engineering team uses when setting performance targets before validating them through simulation and testing.

It’s a technical way to frame a World Champion paint job, but it fits the Tarmac SL9 pretty well.

Not Your Standard Rainbow Bike

World Champion bikes tend to follow a familiar recipe: white frame, rainbow bands, maybe a few gold accents. Vollering’s SL9 goes in a different direction.

The rainbow colors are still there, but they sit inside a much busier graphic treatment designed to look more like layers of data than a traditional championship livery. The effect is meant to show the progression from preparation to performance rather than just the result itself.

Specialized says the design builds on its history of World Championship bikes while giving this one a more modern, engineering-focused look.

The launch brings no new frame technology. Underneath the paint, this is still the S-Works Tarmac SL9 Vollering races at the top level. The update is all about the finish.

A World Champion Bike: About the Work

The bike is less about one winning move and more about everything that had to line up beforehand.

Training. Position. Equipment. Aero testing. Course preparation. Recovery. Small changes that may only be worth a fraction of a second on their own. Specialized took that process and put it on the frame. Because the SL9 was all about gathering all the data and bringing it together for the Equation of Speed.

The rainbow jersey is still the payoff, but on Vollering’s Tarmac, the graphics pay homage to how she got there.
