We The People combine their own BMX roots with heritage klunker mountain biking into an all-new, modern 27.5″ cruiser bike called the Avenger. WTP’s first bike that wasn’t 20″ BMX was a 24″ cruiser seventeen years ago, and they’ve never stopped having fun, riding faster & farther on big wheels. But now they mix in new mountain bike tech for a street AND trail capable ride…
WeThePeople Avenger 27.5″ BMX cruiser, modern MTB klunker
The Avenger name isn’t new for WeThePeople cruisers, but they’d always been retro in both style & at most modern 80s tech, spinning up 26″ wheels at most (outside of a single 29er prototype.) Now this new WTP Avenger/Avngr steps up to more modern mountain bike styling & detailing, with bigger wheels, better brakes, and bike trail-ready tires. Not content to ride freestyle in the streets or hit dirt jumps & pump tracks, this is WTP’s look at how much fun a classically-inspired mountain bike can be.
2020 WTP Avenger modern cruiser – Tech details
The new 27.5″ Avenger isn’t overly modern, sure you get the de rigueur trail wheelsize of the day (with 26mm internal & not especially tubeless-ready) and hydraulic disc brakes, but this is still a retro throwback bike at its heart. And that’s what probably make it the most fun.
The TIG-welded frame of the Avenger is full 4130 chromoly steel, as is the matching 33mm offset unicrown fork and the matching 110mm rise/790mm wide/14° backsweep cruiser bar. Even the crankset from sister brand Salt gets 4130 tubular arms, making the whole setup pretty bombproof. Even with a straightforward singlespeed build that still doesn’t equate to a lightweight, with a complete bike weight claimed at 14.88kg (32.84lb)
The frame gets a mix of classic mountain bike details, with a straight 1 1/8″ steerer, a 27.2mm seatpost, 68mm threaded bottom bracket, external brake routing, and standard 100/135mm bolt-on quick release 6-bolt hubs.
The complete bike does add in some modern alloy components to balance weight & performance, like a standard FSA headset, Shimano MT200 disc brakes, WTB Breakout 27.5 x 2.3″ tires.
WTP provides their own CNC’d alloy top-mount BMX stem, direct mount 42T alloy chainring paired to a 18T cog on the alloy WTP cassette hub, 36 spoke alloy rims, reinforced nylon flat pedals, alloy post, saddle, and Salt lock-on grips.
WTP Avenger geometry & pricing
WeThePeople keeps it simple with the BMX inspiration and a single medium/largish size for the klunker to fit a wide range of riders in an upright position. The Avenger surely isn’t a modern trail geometry bike, with a steep 70° head angle and slack 68° seat angle. Its chainstays are long at 476mm, and gets 63mm of bottom bracket drop (plus a 622mm toptube & 478mm seattube.) But remember this is a bike for cruising not massive climbing or enduro racing.
The WTP Avenger is available now globally as a single complete cruiser build for $950 / £1000 / 1000€. Get yours today from your friendly local WTP dealer, including most US bike shops via QBP.
