Also new are the 386EVO 24mm and T47 bottom brackets we saw at Eurobike, giving you more upgrade options and ways to mix and match cranksets with various frames’ BB standards. For mechanics, they also have a new Sealed Bearing Extractor tool coming in Spring 2018, made to remove bearings with an ID from 8mm to 30mm.

Now that Shimano has gone to Direct Mount for their road RD’s, I wonder if it would be worth offering those as upgrade items for certain popular road models.

Would you rather have a stock unit with an adapter, or a Wheels Mfg unit that lets you go Direct Mount?

Too bad my wheels mfg hanger cost me a frame a few years ago (broke the frame instead of bending or breaking a hanger) – I’ll stick with the OE ones instead

Was the hanger significantly beefier than stock?
I’m not sure you can outright blame the hanger. Some impact directions and forces will cause frame damage while leaving the hanger largely unscathed. Without repeated comparative testing it’s hard to say and the crashes that caused hanger/frame impact are all extremely varied.

That’s like saying you bought new tires for your truck and they gripped so hard you rolled over in a corner.

Not really. The DH is supposed to be a point of failure so you don’t break the derailleur or the frame. Make the hanger stronger and something else down the line breaks. It’s basically like saying I bought a stronger driveshaft for my powerful car, so the transmission blew up instead. You want the first failure point to be cheap and easy to replace.

The database was wrong and my hanger didn’t fit. As a home mechanic, it is safer to go OE because returns are hard for small parts like this.

This is frequently an unpopular opinion, but a forged OEM hanger should generally be stronger than an aftermarket CNC’ed one, since the grains are all aligned in one direction. Just like a good forged stem or seatpost will be lighter and stronger than a good CNC’ed one.

And, of course, you are guaranteed to have a piece which fits.
