Why Cycles knows how to grab the attention of the cycling media – just add a banana. Only this time, it’s not some wild 3D printed banana holster, it’s the latest version of their R+ gravel road bike.

The R+ v3 uses the same titanium construction of previous R+ models, but this time it gets some important updates.

In terms of the tubing itself, the new frame offer an oversized seat tube above the BB junction which is said to improve pedaling efficiency while also adding a bit of compliance. There are updated graphics as well.

Out back, the frames now offer a 160mm flat mount disc brake tab for a lighter and cleaner disc set up. No adapter for a 160mm rotor means a bit less weight overall.

One of the biggest updates comes in under the top tube with more accessory mounts for more stuff. That could mean a standard bottle cage in the back, and a single, uh, banana holster up front. Or you could get your favorite custom frame bag builder to make you a bolt-on frame bag using all of the braze ons as mounts. Whatever you choose, you’ll have the ability to carry more gear on the bike and less on your back for future rides. You’ll also still have the ability to mount racks, fenders, and more.

Without all the gear the bike is even more stunning and should be a welcome improvement over the previous versions. The R+ is still optimized for 700 x 40mm tires, but will fit up to a 46mm or 27.5 x 2.1″. Pricing for a complete bike starts at $4,849 for a 1x SRAM Rival build kit, and bikes are available now.

Its a nice frame but claiming versatility with this fork is kind of funny. Even a fender is a custom option… comeon…

Look closely- the new ENVE fork has fender mounts. Sure it’s no Spork but Why offers different forks; or a frame by itself so you can fit a Surly fork with 15 mounting points if you like.

The last two posts on Why cycles have been so insanely bland, boring and nonsensical. Four braze ons and somehow this company is inventing the wheel and you can carry a banana. Wow. Why cycles has bikes made in China for US handmade prices. Nothing is groundbreaking with this company and it is strange to even bother with this redundancy.

LOL – have you seen handmade US frame prices lately? A stock Moots gravel frame is close to $4K.

Empty space over bb, under water bottle there.
That triangle space is more than big enough to store multitool, tube, co2 and some repair kits.

Why anyone puts seat tube bidon mounts anywhere other than as low as possible, I have no idea. Makes fitting a partial frame nag much easier.

I bought a Why R+ last year. Even though it was delivered in an Evoc bag the frame was scratched. It had a few mechanical issues and the internal cabling rattled. I discussed this with Adam the owner of Why and he worked with me on some of the problems through help from my local bike shop. I was met with a horrible attitude pertaining to the things he didn’t help me fix, brake problems and wheels not being true etc. I had these fixed at my own expense, Sram even ended up giving me new brakes The fixes cost me over $250 on a 3 month old bike. Bottom line customer service at Why is horrible! I’d be weary to even deal with Revel Cycles Adam’s MTB brand. Stay away.
