Heads turned at the Big Gear Show in Park City, Utah last August when attendees first glimpsed the Yakima MajorShady 270 Awning. Boasting 80 square feet and 270 degrees of coverage, but packable down to the size that a small car could float it, the rig looked like a venerable oasis.
But it would be months before it appeared. Now, it’s clear it wasn’t just a mirage.
The MajorShady 270 rolled out this month. The 46.5-lb. awning packs down to a compact roll 90 inches (7.5 feet) long. Bust it out from the left or right side of the vehicle, deploy the support arms, and lag down the included guy lines, and you’ve got sun shade or rain shelter wherever you go.
Yakima says it’s a 10-minute install on “standard” T-slot crossbars such as its proprietary HD Bar, JetStream, or LockNLoad Platform. Minimum crossbar spread is 26 inches.
From there, you can add a wall for extra privacy, and shelter, or create a breezeway on a sweltering day.
The awning is 420D poly-cotton fabric with a PU coating, patterned with a topographic design. The zip-up travel cover is “rugged” vinyl.
