Esher Shore’s long awaited pump track is set to open very shortly, according to the Esher blog. To add some of the finishing touches and bolster the strength of the berms, a little more rain is needed before the track can claimed to be ready to ride. However, Mountain Biking UK’s journalists have already been shredding the track and are due to write a report on the track’s construction for the next issue.

So is a pump track just a bmx track for beginners… Or am I missing something?

No. A BMX track usually has an elevated start, jumps, and sections where racers must pedal to get to the end. A pump track is a series of rollers that is designed to work on a riders technique. Riders gain speed by pumping their bike through the course instead of pedaling; moving the bike underneath their bodies. Most pump tracks are made with interweaving loops, so there is typically no set start/finish point.

thanks for the comments

as many riders have been enjoying the recent weeks of “dry weather” in the UK, we (trail builders at Esher) have been cursing the lack of rain!!

we need wet weather to finish the pump track, before we open it to the public…

we’ve had some negative feedback and even abuse from riders who wonder why it is taking so long, but I’d say to these guys, it does not happen over night….

its fine when we have the trail crew riding a short time, digging, and riding some more to test out the work – but as soon as the facility is opened and many riders are sessioning, skidding, crashing, braking hard, any ‘problem’ areas will quickly degenerate

the Esher Pump Track is 90% there, but we need rain to reinforce areas of the track which have “blown out” (basically where the imported Hoggins Clay riding surface is too thin, and has gone through to the sand under layer) or where reinforcement is needed to tops of berms, or individual pump bumps need reshaping to be safer and work better

work is forecast for this Bank Holiday, which has the Esher trail crew fired up to grab their shovels and get digging

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Esher trail crew for all their hard work since August 2009, you won’t find many riders digging at 8am on a Sunday morning…
