The new Onza Aquila is their first signature series tire, developed with Aaron Gwin for his DH pursuits. onza hs sponsored him and his team for a bit now, and hey say he’s been very eager to use his years of racing experience to design a tread that delivers the performance he wants.

It’s the first of what will probably be three Gwin-inspired treads, and (unofficially) is the culmination of features he’s liked from Specialized, Bontrager and Maxxis tires throughout his carrer. It’s a wire bead 27.5×2.4 with their DH casing to start, and a freeride casing option will follow. This one will come with the option of their 45a or Visco rubber compounds. Both are soft, but the latter is closer to a 40a and is for race day only as it’s very soft and squishy.

Estimated weight is TBD but probably around 1150g, with the folding Kevlar bead Freeride casing version probably coming in just under 1,000g. They’re just going into production, looking for a January ship date. Pricing will be in line with other tires, about $80, and for the US market, prices for many of their tires have come down a bit recently.

Not shown, they are looking at the gravel, adventure and cyclocross segments, but those projects are likely a little ways off.

Looks great. DHR, butcher, old specialized clutch…. I could through in a few more excellent tires that this looks influenced by. Please make it in 26, preferably in a mid weight casing like super gravity, and double down.

Yes I know 26 is dead. Just because new 26″ bikes aren’t being made doesn’t mean profits aren’t there for tires. I alone burn through tires like a trailer park barbecue. I’ve probably spent 500 bucks this year on tires so far.

Well, if you’re going to copy a tire, a DHR II is a good one to copy. Also, Onza tires tend to be a bit cheaper than Maxxis, so this could be very nice.
