Scope’s most eye-catching wheels are probably their Artech Aeroscale models, with scale-shaped molding providing maximum aerodynamics for road riding. Now, they’re smoothing it over for gravel, giving you most of the aero benefits but in a lighter, more affordable option.

The new Scope R4.G Gravel wheelset has the same engineering DNA and proven rim profiles of the Artech 4.G, just without the Aeroscales. And it gets steel spokes, not carbon, yet still comes in at 1439 grams.

The 28 mm internal width hookless rim is aerodynamically optimized for 45 mm tubeless tires. The hookless design is a departure from their road and triathlon wheels, which maintain a hook for better bead security at higher air pressures. But with the lower tire pressure typically used on gravel bikes and their wider tires, they went with hookless which they claim makes for easier setup.

They say the wider rim provides better lateral stiffness, which is enhanced by the Sapim CX-Ray T-head aero spokes’ strength. Internal nipples are hidden inside the rim, adding a subtle aerodynamic gain.

The rims also use Scope’s Local Reinforcement carbon technology. Additional carbon layers around the spoke holes on the inside of the rim resist pull-through where extra strength is needed, but saves weight elsewhere in the rim.

The new R-series hubs

Updated R-series hubs borrow more of their Artech-series hubs’ design to save weight. But, they’re not only lighter, they’re also stiffer and more durable.

The lightweight, CNC-machined R-Series hubs use Scope’s Diamond Ratchet engagement system for instant power transfer and long-term reliability. A mechanical labyrinth seal effectively blocks dirt from entering the hub, reducing maintenance needs. And, the hubs are designed specifically for bladed T-head spokes, preventing spoke twist.

They’re compatible with all major freehub body standards – Shimano HG / Micro Spline, SRAM (X)DR, and Campagnolo / N3W.

The new Scope R4.G are available through dealers or direct. MSRP is €1.698 ($1,798).

If you exclude every bike tech that had problems once you’d be walking

Me too! I suppose they know they’ll loose a share of the market and maybe earn interest from the public they target
