2013 Salsa Cycles Warbird gravel dirt road bike with disc brakes and ENVE fork

The folks at XXCMag were on hand at Salsa Cycles’s dealer event inside QBP’s Saddle Drive and snapped these pics of the new Salsa Warbird.

We caught wind of this thing when we visited ENVE’s factory and spied the new disc brake road bike fork, but had to wait until now to see what it’d be mounted on. That they’re using the road fork and not the cyclocross one hints at the bike’s geometry and intended use. UPDATE: Turns out this one is using the cyclocross fork and a new disc-specific road bike is coming. More on that soon, see comments from Salsa below.

Two versions appear to be making their way to dealers, the alloy model shown here and a titanium Warbird shown after the break. More details as we get them…

They look nice, just wish more manufacturers would mount the cables on the side or top of top tube–screw the perceived aesthetics, portaging ability is more important IMHO.

Hey guys – just want to get the correct info out there.

The Warbird is a gravel specific racing bike, and for this has clearance up to 38c tires. For this, the Warbird uses the standard ENVE CX Disc fork

We also launched another new model today called the Colossal, which is a dedicated road disc bike with 28c tire clearance. It is the model that will have the new ENVE RD Disc fork that we worked with them on to create, the one that Tyler mentions he saw at the factory.

The Warbird will come in 3/2.5 seamless double butted titanium and Extrolite EV6 aluminum. The Colossal will come in 3/2.5 seamless double butted titanium and double butted 4130 chomoly. All will have the 44mm headtube, and all specs and framesets include their partnered ENVE fork.

I’m a huge fan of how Salsa keeps coming up with these niche bikes. They are listening to the market, and not the over populate market, but the riders, riders market.

Very cool.

I’m pleased to NOT SEE any of those ridiculous cable-hydro converters on these.

Please NO braze on rack/fender mounts. For the few dorks that need to run racks, vs. frame and seat packs all us smart people are using, just clamp the crap on the frame.

What’s the rear spacing on the Road disc?

Why they have not done this many years ago is a mystery to me. Disc brakes are many times better than brake pads on rims. Now designers can build better wheels and more aero frames just by adding discs. This is a no brainer for ALL road bikes.

@ Whatever:

Not sure where you live but riding without fenders in the Seattle area is a big mistake. Not only will you be banished from most group rides for a good chunk of the year you’ll also wear out your drive train a lot faster. Plus around here nothing screams “dork” more than a giant mud streak up your backside. Do agree about ditching the racks.

@ Whatever

What possible difference would it make to you if something that weighs practically nil was included on a frame and you didn’t use it? Nada.

Conversely it’s a rather large issue if you happen to need something on a frame, like fender and rack eyelets, that aren’t there.

Ever try to find a cross bike that has fender and rack mounts and weighs less than five pounds? Good luck with that. If someone ever makes one I’m buying two. Maybe three.

Ugh. Under top tube cable routing. Horrible idea. Heck of a way to remove a huge chunk of potential buyers… people that use these bikes as both gravel and cross racing bikes.

strangely i see a spot for 3 water bottle holders on the warbird ? good idea or bad with no rack mounts might make a good frame build up for a light touring machine.

I am about as bummed that this does not have rack and fender eyelets as i am that my carbon road bike does not have rack and fender eyelets.

Stop complaining that it has under top tube cable routing. It is not a cross bike. If you want a cross bike, go buy a cross bike, there are probably one or two commercially available cross bikes out there, this isn’t your only option.
