Wheels Manufacturing has just introduced a new bottom bracket bearing press and has given us a first look. Toying with calling the low-cost drifts Devo, the universal BB press is made to fit all current Wheels Mfg. models of press fit bearings from PF24 through to BB95, and everything in between. That means that it will likely fit just about every other manufacturer’s bottom bracket bearings as well, and comes at a reasonable price. To top it off ever more for this limited first production that we got an advance look at, Wheels Mfg. is offering the complete tool for 50% off final retail, so you can take one home for less than an Andrew Jackson. Take a closer look and get full compatibility after the break…

The clean and simple BB press tool is made of two machined aluminum handles that spin on a zinc-plated 1/2″ threaded rod. The handles drive a pair of step machined aluminum drifts that securely fit into standard press fit bottom bracket bearings for a simple and true install. The universal drifts are designed to eliminate the search for a different precise tool for each BB install job, and can be flipped around to cycle through all standards offered by Wheels Mfg.

That includes 22, 24, and 30mm BB axle diameters and every size shell you can think of to fit those: PF24, BB30, PF30, BB86, BB92, BBRight, BB386EVO, plus Cannondale’s BB30A & PF30A, Specialized’s OSBBs, and Trek’s BB90 & BB95.

Regular MSRP for the press will be $35 once this first run goes, but that means that the special price now is just $17.50. Wheels hasn’t said how many they’ve already made, just that supplies are limited, so first-come, first-served.

That looks like really good value, even for the regular price!

Just got one too. If you are a new subscriber to their newsletter you can save a HUGE 15% off of the already discounted price too. That is what I just did. I just bought a drift and bearings for replacing my 6806 bearings in one of their BB 2 weeks ago. This would have been great then, but will definitely come in useful in the future.

Nice to see where they got the idea from to. Edward de Bono would be proud of the brainstorming lid.

“That means that it will likely fit just about every other manufacturer’s bottom bracket bearings as well…”

Nope, definitely not! This is just one more tool designed by a BB manufacturer to install their own BBs. The point is that the drifts are designed to apply pressure on 42 mm OD bearings (in case of a 30-mm-spindle) or 37 mm OD bearings (in case of a 22/24 mm spindle).

If you’d use these drifts for the purpose of installing a SRAM PF30 BB (newer design with plastic spindle sleeves) or a Shimano PressFit BB or a Chris King BB, you’d apply pressure on the inner race of the bearing.

So yes, it’s a nice tool for Wheels Mfg BBs – but far from being a universal tool (fair enough, the Wheels Mfg website does not claim it is for anything else than their own BBs).
