All of Boyd Cycling’s new carbon and alloy wheels debuted last year, so for this year’s show they displayed refinements like a disc brake specific version of the carbon clinchers and tubulars in 28, 44 and 60 mm depths, plus the 90mm shown above that’s coming soon. The alloy clinchers also get a disc specific version. It’s not just the absence of a brake track that makes them different, they also tweaked the angle of the spoke drillings to work better with disc brake hubs laced 2x on both sides since there’s now negative torque going into the wheel from braking forces.

Rim weights for the 90mm are 640g (tubular) and 690g (clincher), which they admit is a bit heavier than some competing rims because they increased the layup on the sidewalls to make them stiffer. Boyd says once rims get that deep, thinner sidewalls offer a flex point, so super thin carbon walls that you can squeeze can also flex under sprinting or hard cornering efforts.

The Eternity Hub they they worked on for so long has gone away. Their manufacturing partner couldn’t get the tolerances tight enough for it to have the reliability Boyd wanted, so they’re offering White Industries hubs as an $350 upgrade option instead. Roll on down to check out the all-new cyclocross-specific alloy tubulars and more…

Ceramic versions of the Altamont and Altamont Lite use a thermo spray to apply the ceramic coating onto the braking surface at very high temperatures to create a hard, durable coating. It offers much improved braking performance by creating more friction. They include the Kool-Stop ceramic brake pads and are available for a $150 upcharge.

Black and Tan alloy tubular is 23.5mm wide and the internal radii is shaped to perfectly fit a 32mm wide tire, giving you a full edge to edge gluing surface. Rim is 430g, and complete wheels come in at 720g F and 870g R. Retail is $700 for the pair with Quest hubs, add coins and 20g for White Industries hubs.
