Since the age of social media began, we’ve probably all heard the phrase ‘If you didn’t get it on video, it didn’t happen’. While videos prove to your buddies that you hit a huge jump or blitzed down a super-technical trail, GoPro users can now show off their feats in greater detail with telemetry data overlays.

If you’ve got a GoPro Hero 5 Black camera and Quik for Desktop software on your computer, you can now display speed, G-forces, GPS path and more with gauges showing what’s happening in real time while your video plays. GoPro is late to the telemetry party as other POV cameras already offer similar functions, but at least fans of the brand can now enjoy this feature…

The telemetry overlay feature was just recently added to GoPro’s Quik for Desktop app, which comes bundled with GoPro’s Studio editing software. Using the Hero 5 Black’s built-in GPS capabilities, your GPS path, speed, altitude, G-force, elevation (and more) can be recorded and displayed as on-screen graphics.

The primary info cluster can show viewers your distance (in miles or Km’s), altitude, elevation gain, and the date and time of the recording. The camera’s GPS also records your route, and a G-force meter shows how hard you’re railing corners or accelerating.

A speedometer with an integrated compass displays your speed and orientation, and the speed data is also used to create a graph that charts your rate of travel throughout your activity. GoPro also suggests using the speed graph to aid in the editing process, as users can quickly find their fastest or most exciting moments with a quick glance.

The graphic overlays are all customizable so users can choose the size and location of the gauges, as well as which gauges they wish to show. For more info or to download the Quik for Desktop software, check out GoPro’s website.

My computer can’t even process 4k videos. Add overlay and watch it melt the CPU.

GoPro succeeds because of advertising. There are hundreds of action cameras, many of which are a far better shape than the ridiculous teletubby look. Not to mention video quality on par or better. Anyone spending $300-400 on an action cameras has money to burn.

Yup. GoPro will continue to slide in popularity. I bought a first generation when it was the only real option. Now there’s no way I’d buy a current one.
