Terrene Tires is back in time for summer riding with the new McFly 2.8” plus mountain bike tire. Slotting in between the more aggressively knobbed Chunk, which comes in 2.3 and 3.0 widths, the McFly will offer the upper middle width in both 27.5 and 29er sizes. The tread height is lower in the center and transition areas, increasing as it moves to the side to maintain solid cornering grip in all conditions. We saw these a little early at Sea Otter Classic, when official weights weren’t published, but now we’ve got all the specs…
They don’t call out directional options, but the looks of the knob shapes suggest it can be run in different directions front and rear to maximize steering precision or braking and forward traction.
Like their other tires, the McFly will come in a Light and Tough versions. The Light measures in at about 760g (27.5×2.8) or 810g (29×2.8) and gets a supple 120tpi casing. The Tough uses a burlier 60tpi casing with their TekShield puncture protection layer running bead to bead and weighs in around 880g (27.5×2.8) or 930g (29×2.8). Both versions have a dual compound 62a/51a rubber, a folding Aramid bead, and are tubeless ready. Retail is $80 each regardless of size or version.
