Starting this month, the 150g Giro Prolight Techlace road bike shoes are finally available. Shown at Eurobike on a scale to prove they actually come in lighter than claimed in smaller sizes, the super light kicks were worn by Taylor Phinney this past weekend in the Tour de France. And they’ll hit stores in July, with a price point of $400. Yep, that’s a lot, but it’s actually $100 less than originally thought. They also get a new color…

 

The shoes feature a lightweight mesh with TexTreme carbon sole, which can be made about 22% lighter than a standard carbon sole, and their three-strap Techlace closure system.

We reviewed the Factor Techlace, which uses the same concept, and really liked it. The soft laces don’t retain any shape, allowing easy, gradual changes to fit throughout the ride as feet swell or you need to tighten them up for a sprint.

Uppers are a technical microfiber mesh welded to a Teijin TPU film to provide structure. Claimed weight is sub-150g per shoe for a size 42.5. Price is $400 (€399 / £349).

I know they’re a technological marvel and all that, but if the aim of these shoes is lightweight, surely it would be lighter/better to leave off the velcro straps and run them as a purely laced shoe? That’s where I’d go if every gram counted to me; after all, the UCI weigh the bikes and not the riders’ clothing so perhaps ultralight footwear is the final frontier for weight weenies?
Rotational weight and all that . . .

A large majority of riders wanted the ability to adjust the shoelace tension during a ride without stopping. Giro already makes shoes with shoelaces only.

…but not ones weighing less than 150gr.
That was the point of my original post; if it’s designed to be the lightest possible shoe, then why add velcro and straps? Justification for the overkill of straps AND lace designs found elsewhere, perhaps? Lace tension during a ride can be adjusted without stopping and without the need for additional straps. A solution to a problem that didn’t exist.

…but real WW’s never fit pedals so that their bikes match the manufacturers’ claimed weights.

You can just take these techlaces off and buy regular laces… You’d have some exposed velcro on the outside of the shoe, but if you want to save a gram off of something this light already, you probably don’t care about looks.

Velcro wears out. For that price, I should be able to replace it. Currently using Empires on and off road with no complaints.
