When Spinergy first hit the market decades ago, they make a splash with the X-shaped, four-blade design that sliced through the air. They followed that with their SPOX line, which used a traditional lacing style but substituted composite fibers for steel in the spokes. That made their wheels crazy light, but (in my experience, anyway) the rear hubs weren’t very durable. But the company’s persisted, doing more in the wheelchair market than bikes for a long time. Now, they’re back with an all-new collection of wheels for bikes.

Shown up top, the ZLite alloy gets a shallow profile aluminum rim that’s tubeless ready and has a complete wheelset weight of just 1415g.

It’ll be offered in rim ($799 per set) and disc brake ($849) options using their new aero spokes. No longer Kevlar, their PBO fiber spokes are now molded into an bladed shape to improve aerodynamics. Compared to Kevlar, the PBO material has less give, so they can build a stiffer, stronger wheel. With a 17mm internal width, the Zlite is intended for road use only.

Spinergy FCC carbon clincher with PBO composite fiber aero spokes

The new FCC carbon wheels come in 32mm and 47mm depths ($1776 and $1945, respectively), also with rim or disc brake hubs.

They’re a bit wider at 18mm internal, also tubeless ready. Weights are 1550g and 1750g.

Spinergy 29er LX mountain bike wheels with composite spokes

For mountain bike, the new 29erLX comes in at $999 and 24mm wide internal.

It has Boost spacing, thru axles and other typical options, XD or regular freehub bodies, and round PBO spokes. Claimed weight is 1622g.

I had a pair of SPOX wheels back in the day, and then later Xyclone disc wheels when they first came out. Both on XC race bikes. It was laughable how fast those Spinergys accelerated out of corners because there was no spoke mass. They had a very unique ride feel too…smooth and no chatter. The hubs were atrocious, though; bearings never seemed to last. And if you dropped a chain behind the cassette just once, it would destroy the spokes by slicing into the PBO.

Looks like no Centerlock. I also wonder how many points of engagement the rear hubs have…

I had a pair of their road wheelset with the PBO spokes. They were a big failure. Lightweight but garbage.

the original Rev-X wheel was actually 8 spokes (4 per side) Last I checked, Spinergy will not acknowledge the existence of that wheel design. Also, the PBO spokes never used Kevlar. (and yeah… their hubs sucked donkey b@lls)

Spinergy acknowledges the Rev X wheels. I even called and spoke to someone a couple months ago about small parts for a set. They don’t have any which sucks but oh well.
I know people still racing on them.
Given how many Pros used them and won on them including Cippolini, not sure why they wouldn’t acknowledge them.

The design flaw wasn’t the PBO spokes, it was the cheap spoke nipples that would break and no local shops had replacement parts.

Loved my Xyclones of 13ish years ago….. Best wheels I’ve owned, only the lack of UK distributor and availability of spares where their let down. On the bike they were great.

i LOVED my SPOX wheels! Very light for the time, stiff, durable enough for cross racing and great acceleration. I never had a single problem with them.

The RevX wheels were phenomenal. They were the first “wheelset” on the market, followed closely by Mavic’s early Helium. They were used to win many a race under the top riders of the day. But not unlike disc brakes of today, they were seen as dangerous in a crash. The “spokes”, or blades as Spinergy referred to them, were seen to eject from the wheel if a pedal came into the spokes or in a large crash. This was seen as too dangerous by the UCI and its backers. So a new test for wheels was devised by the UCI for “safety”. This test was a “destructive” test that rendered any wheel useless. Basically a wheel was affixed to a large sled that would then slam into a 8-12″ “curb”. During this test no part of the wheel was allowed to eject beyond the plane of the original wheel upon complete destruction. Spinergy’s full carbon tensioned blade RevX failed this test dramatically. Many of us in the industry knew this test was designed for that purpose. To this day, the test is considered unrealistic because the forces that are put on the wheel when it hits the “curb” are higher than the UCI holds for both the fork and the frame. So in reality before your wheels ejected its spokes your fork crown would sheer off or your downtube would buckle. Spinergy discontinued the production of the RevX and the actual patent holder moved on to other things.

Roval, Campagnolo, Zipp and Hed all had wheelset back in the late 80’s. Long before Spinergy came out with the RevX wheels.

@RipNshread No love for Roval wheels? And I’m sure there were even earlier wheelsets.

I have a set of now delaminated rev Xs and they were amazing. had them on a chromoly Japanese Soma from the early 80s. Some day I will get that bike restored. That bike was significantly faster than even the lightest aero carbon wonderbike with spoked wheels, and the ride quality is just superb. so supple and smooth. Bike manufacturers need to stop appeasing UCI and just build cool, fast bikes. Its an absolute shame they arent producing an all carbon disc version of these still today.

For what it is worth, I had a set of the road PBO spoked wheels and absolutely LOVED them for cyclocross or road racing on torn up roads. In a flat crit they were too spongy, but that sponginess was a godsend in the dirt and ripped up pavement. Super smooth. I sold them with my cross bike a few years ago….wish I still had them.
