Gevenalle has been reworking TRP brake levers to accommodate their add-on index shifters, giving cyclocross and adventure riders an inexpensive, durable option for bikes that see a lot of abuse. Now, they’re converting the single-speed-specific TRP Hylex hydraulic disc brake levers to work with their shifters, too.

The conversion kit runs from $149 to $219 depending on what you need. They offer kits for all of their existing shifting options, from 8-speed Alfine to 10- and 11-speed road to 10- and 11-speed Dynasys mountain bike shifting. Just pick the derailleur system you’re using, and get the right shifter for that. If you’re running a front derailleur, they have options for 2x and 3x chainring setups.

The system comes with their crash replacement guarantee, where they’ll rebuild or replace them for $34 per side. And you can upgrade them from 10- to 11-speed should you update your drivetrain in the future. Available now.

For the less mechanically inclined, they sell a complete kit that requires no assembly. It’s also built around the TRP Hylex RS brakeset, and comes with all of the same shifting options for $449 to $499.


  1. Yes, can we stop calling them “single-speed” brakes. They are drop bar brakes. The don’t have an integrated shifter, but that does not mean they are single-speed only.

  2. The Hylex is one of those bits of kit that I love but am always trying to find the perfect use for. Have run them for 3 years. As far as brakes go, they are great. The SS CX bike passed away so now they are used on second CX build. Still great brakes, comfy hoods, powerful, but bar end shifters aren’t my favorite and I didn’t want to spurge for integrated shifters/levers. This seems like a reasonable option except for $149-219 is steep. For now I’ll just keep running the hack job that got a mountain shifter onto that drop bar bike.

    • Haha, that’s my exact same setup. Paul’s SRAM shifter adapter running a 1×10 setup. I’ll deal with the shifting being not as ideal for how great the TRP Hylex RS are.

  3. I wonder if anyone would want to run SRAM R2C levers on them, that way the shift levers are always in the same position for easier access in the drops.

  4. Last time I looked into this, it was cheaper to buy the brakes/levers from TRP and then the conversion kit from Gevenalle, than it was for the full system from Gevenalle…

  5. Single Speed Shifters – sure we do those! What else are we meant to call them now brakes and shifters are the same thing (people don’t like to call their STI Brifters for some reason 🙂

    The above is a little misleading. Our systems are pretty much all index (not friction) and Shimano compatible (road and MTB). System is designed for cyclocross. Does not shift from drops (so we don’t push it for road use, but great for touring etc) but from the hoods it offers more than competitors in area of shifting, weight, durability and cost etc.

    Last but not least we build them in Portland, Oregon to be as ugly as possible so as to keep the posers from using them ;p

  6. They are not cheap. Unless you find reasonable that a supposed cheap brake system for road bikes costs almost as much as a whole flat bar mtb with hydraulics

    Brifters were always way too overpriced compared to flat bars, but now with hydraulics the difference got even bigger

    • Agreed pretty exorbitant pricing considering you can get Shimano RS505 levers/calipers and a tan pan for about 100 bucks less than the full system here.

      • @ Crash Bandicoot, These compare well with Shimano RS685 which are $339 a side ($678 pair compared to our $499). The Gevenalle system is made with USA machined parts and comes in a bit lighter.

        Sure there are sales but we like quote retail prices as we hope that bike shops are able to get full margin on sales so they can be profitable. Bike shops have it pretty hard these days with overseas online merchants offering discount prices and no support. The Gevenalle system is designed to be more durable as well as serviceable. If you break an RS685 lever you will be out $339, with our system we will repair any damage for $74.
