Or he could increase his purchasing power by getting wheels direct from the manufacturer. Buy smarter, not harder.

Haha Reynolds wheels have always been crap our team shop had to stop carrying them because of how many warranty issues they had (and lifetime warranty from Reynolds is a joke they will blame everything on the rider and not warranty 95% of wheels) You can easily get a set of light bicycle rims built to DT Swiss hubs for $1000 heck my LB rims laced to Onyx hubs were cheaper than these.

90 day return policy… is that what you will tell your wife / girlfriend, dentist and plastic surgenon after getting a busted face due to a wheel collapse?
Are you sure you got the real parts on your “bargain” wheelset and not just a set of fake parts thrown together and assembled?
Price is what you pay, value is what you get – W.Buffet.
If it’s too good to be true, it usually is – Common sense.
Good luck with your bargain wheelset. LOL. 🙂

Yes, bike related death and injury skyrocketed after Chinese started making generic carbon components /sarcasm

I think catastrophic failures did increase in the frame and component segments. In the beginning things were copied and no testing was done. Today the testing is being done but the tolerance standards are low with a lot of these cheap parts. At the end of the day you decide if that is something you are willing to live with.

I’ve been riding chinese wheels for 3 years and have beaten the hell out of them. As have a number of my friends. Your knee jerk reaction to “Chinese” does not bear in mind that wheels are suspended structures, and thus not as prone to random disintegration. If you hit something hard enough to disintegrate a wheel, you probably have other problems to deal with in the more immediate time frame. Of course, you still want to chose your supplier wisely, and do a little research. And don’t look to closely at the manufacturing origins of all the other name brand stuff you are riding…

The majority of riders I know wouldn’t even consider these wheels, let alone consider them “less coin”

I’m sorry, but 28 spokes just isn’t quite enough.

Last year I took a chance and bought a ” cheap Chinese carbon disc cyclocross wheelset” for around $400 of of eBay. After completely beating the crap out of these wheels, on gravel, fireroad, rocky singletrack, etc, these wheels are perfectly straight, no dings, cracks or scratches.
I’m impressed with these wheels and wouldn’t hestitate to buy another set
Although the wheels I mentioned above are for a different type of bike and riding, we shouldn’t always confuse something that is lower in price than a comparable product, as a crappy product. I’m sure these wheels and the $610wheels that jjxjjd mentioned are fine, but you still have to be cautious.

Why would you buy cheap carbon rims or wheels when you can get perfectly good brand name aluminum rims that will give you a peace of mind and weigh the same.

There’s nothing to be gained with carbon wheels on a mtb that you’re going to smash into rocks, drops etc.

Eh, off road wheels break when tire pressure is too low usually, and anything that will crack a well made carbon rim will dent the crap out of an aluminum rim too.

Well you are completely wrong about carbon wheels / rims not being able to take mtb abuse. The advantages are also huge! A set of alu rims riden hard for a season needs to be replacement or rebuild. Two years riding nox composites rims and only trued once. I ride rigid in SoCal
