Thanks to the proliferation of the 1x, small chainring manufacturers have seen a rebirth. But for companies like Aribike, they don’t just make single chain rings. Replacing your double rings with another set of dual rings may not be as popular as switching out the ring on your 1x, but for racers or those looking for the perfect gearing it’s an important thing to consider.

Like most of the rest of the industry though, evolving BCD ‘standards’ are a moving target. In order to remain current, Aribike is continually putting out new designs like they have for Shimano Dura Ace R9100 and Ultegra R8000. Not only do the rings match the proprietary four bolt 110mm BCD, but they have the massive notch necessary to clear the fat crank arms.

Available for Dura Ace R9100 or Ultegra R8000, the rings are ordered as a kit with your choice of tooth count for both the small (33-42t) and large (40-58t) chainrings. You also have the choice of round (€130) or oval (€140), and the usual choice of anodizing color from Ari. Oval rings have the additional choice of of Strong for a more durable training ring, or Race for a lighter competition build. Finally, the option for 10 speed or 11 speed specification would allow you to upgrade the crank while keeping your current drivetrain. Aribike also makes single rings that will fit if you want to ditch the double completely.

I wonder how many people think “Wow, I’d really like to replace my beautiful, light, perfectly shifting chainrings with chainrings that look like they were machined in someone’s garage in the 90’s and can’t possibly match the shifting performance”…. I know they’re cheaper, but still…

Hahahaha yes!!!!! I think it’s physically impossible to drop a chain on a 5800 crank with a 6800 derailleur or have a bad shift (I’ve tried) and they’re like $68 from wiggle.

Once you go elliptical it’s hard to go back. My mountain and gravel/commuter bikes are both 1x with Wolf Tooth ellipticals, but my road bike is still round.

Chris Froome uses oval rings and that gangly spider monkey seems to do ok.

Uh, are these “Biopace” rings from the 1980’s?…..the rings that everyone said would cause knee problems because they produced an uneven, irregular cadence? And whatever happened to Mavic’s electronic shifting from around the same time period? What’s old is new and what’s new is already old.

How has the last 20yrs of life been in that cave Steve? 😉 Seriously though, that have the oval offset 90 degrees from biopace, and this style has been popular since the early 2000s, giving oval rings a 2nd chance at life (or a 3rd or 4th, if you count periods when they were used back in the late 1800s or early 1900s.

Mavic zap was really cool conceptually, but left something to be desired in use, and had problems with shift reliability and waterproofing.

Just to catch you up on other developments, carrying water bottles, pumps, and tool kits attached to your bike is cool again, just like the 80s, and backpack water/tool carrying is out, so don’t get caught looking like a dork from 2002.

For bike and clothing colors, matte black has been cool for a while now, but is on the way out with roadies who prefer not to get hit by texting teenage drivers. Suffice it to say, day glow/high vis green is back, so don’t get caught making fun of a “fred” for wearing a jersey that looks like it’s from Nashbar. It is actually probably a new pro level signature jersey from Rapha or something.

Stay tuned for a return to earth tones in about 3yrs or so. They are alredy gaining a foothold with the bikepacking crowd (which is another trend you should catch up on. You probably knew it as “touring”).

Well, depends on oval’s eccentricity. I’ve used Biopace for 3 years in a row and can confirm on knee problems. Sometimes I barely could walk afrer clocking out 200+ kilometers. Once I’ve switched back to round, knee pain has gone. But not all oval’s are like that. It’s just Biopace that was such a failure.

Is it made in Arizona? Hahaha what an odd design.

I’ve purchased some XX1 chainrings from Ari in January this year. They are absolutely crap! The chain simply won’t stay on the chainring when it gets slightly bumpy. (Ari won’t admit)
