BONT Cycling has taken a new integrated direction with the BOA dials and how they lace the BOA cables in their latest Helix road bike shoes. By wrapping a single wire loop all the way around the sole of the shoe and crossed twice over the forefoot, the Helix promises an unparalleled fit.
Bont Helix road shoes with full wrap-around Boa cabling
Already known for their premium anatomic fit & customization, Bont’s new Helix dials in fit to a new level, wrapping a unique new cable closure system just below the surface of the new shoes.
At first glance the Helix doesn’t look so different from Bont’s previous top model the Vaypor S, still getting what looks like an upper Boa closure and then a pair of crossing Boa wire loops across the forefoot.
The difference of course is that the new Helix does it all with a single Boa dial placed high on the shoe.
That single cable loop then laces its way from the top along the outside of the shoe, ducking into two holes that take the wire just under the surface, under the instep, then crosses over to the top of the forefoot again where it crosses back on itself to deliver finite adjustment across the top of the foot – from toe to ankle.
The carbon structure of the shoe allows Bont to trace those wires round your foot without creating any hot spots of wire tension, yet allowing the lightweight Durolite synthetic fabric of the shoe to be evenly stretched around your foot – instead of just across the top of your foot. The single dial keeps adjustment simple. And combined with the overlapping design of the upper, Bont says it also allows a greater range of adjustment, most apparent in matching rider’s unique foot volume without pressure points.
One dial keeps weight down, to just 230g per shoe, while expanding Bont’s concept of custom fitting.
The Helix shares a lot of carry over core Bont tech like their heat moldable customization, plus the unidirectional monocoque carbon sole with its detailed printed grid to align your cleats, the reinforced toe scuff guard & toe venting, and supportive anatomic heel cup that also gets scuff protection. The new Helix shoes sell for $400 and are available now in five standard colors – shiny red/white, metallic blue/white, black/gold, black/white, and white/charcoal.
