Looking for something better than a department store bike for your kid? We know you are, after all, a good kids bike means longer days of riding, more miles before maintenance, and a higher quality experience that makes them want to keep riding. The new Trek Roscoe 20+ and 24+ combine all the right features at a reasonable price point of $449 (20”) and $479 (24”).

For that price, you get a premium hydroformed alloy frame in four different color options. And they made both sizes in the same four colors, so no more issues about your kid really wanting a color in a bike that doesn’t fit them.

Money was put where it mattered most, like the frame, but spec isn’t bad. It’ll come with CST 2.8” wide tires, Shimano Journey 1×8, and mechanical disc brakes. And lets be honest, if we’re looking at this, chances are we’ve got plenty of old 10-speed mountain bike parts that will make easy upgrades on this bike.

Look at the Giant XTC Jr 24″. I just got one for my 7 year old. Really sweet bike with hydro disks, 1×9 shimano, 2.8 tires. $560. He rips on that thing.

Not as easy or cheap as you think. Most of these kinda bikes come with freewheels and not freehubs. Thus requiring a hub/wheel swap.

It’s a cassette hub. I am curious about the weight of these bikes.

Both the Trek and Giant weighted in at 25 lbs.

What is the rear hub spacing? It is running a 2.8 tire, so is it a standard hub? I cannot find any info on the wheels either. Can I run a skinnier tire, say a 2.35?
