At this point, for us anyways, Vanlife is just a tongue in cheek hashtag. While it may best apply to the finer points of living out of a cargo van to chase your singletrack dreams, for those of us who already have a vehicle that’s not a van, it could just as easily apply to something like the Overland Access EDC trailer. You could even just call it camping, but your average camper won’t make it anywhere near where you can go with the EDC. And once you get there, it just might be the most well equipped trailer we’ve seen so far.

Designed, engineered, manufactured, assembled, and tested in the U.S., Overland Access is based out of Central Oregon. Just three years old as a company, Overland Access’ founder Terry Manier has a background in industrial design and commercial design and it shows. The EDC is a veritable puzzle with every nook and cranny optimized for storage with a super smart overall design.

Starting with a tube steel chassis that is welded and hot-dipped galvanized as one piece, the body is constructed from aluminum using aviation quality riveting. To create a rugged trailer that can go anywhere your truck can, the EDC uses a trailing arm suspension which means there’s no axle to hang up on trail obstacles with 1’7″ of ground clearance and 33″ tires. Terry mentioned it’s the exact same width and tracking as his Toyota Tacoma, so any where it can go, the EDC can go too.

The full length from the spare tire to the hitch is just over 13′, it measures 6’3″ wide, and has a dry weight of 2100lbs. Fully loaded you’re looking at around 2500lbs. To help slow things down, it’s equipped with RedArc trailer brakes.

Of course we’re all wondering about the bike carrying capabilities, and it’s got that fully covered with three separate hitch receivers to mount just about anything including a raised bike rack to provide plenty of ground clearance. It’s hard to explain but the receivers can also be used as a jack to lift the trailer when needed by moving the leveling device from the front to the back. There are a ton of possibilities with this thing.

Terry is working on a hitch adapter that will be included and will allow the bike rack to flip down so you can get into the rear storage as well. The racks are also positioned to clear the included full size spare.

This wouldn’t be a camping trailer without a place to sleep, so the EDC includes a tent rack to mount your favorite roof top tent (RTT). Between the tent, and the actual bike rack, these are about the only things that aren’t included in the package. The rack will accommodate just about any RTT, and it will include an Alu-Cab Shadow 270° awning which is different than the one shown above.

Using the space next to the tent, or the sub rack underneath, you can add mounts for SUPs, kayaks, gear or fire wood baskets, and more – plus there are four side plates for carrying shovels, Maxtrax, extra water, fuel, and more.

Flip down the bike rack, and open the back panel, and you’re greated with the first massive storage bay. Two sliding racks can hold up to 200lbs each, and built in LED lighting makes it easy to find what you need. There’s also an AC outlet, DC outlet, and two fast charge USB ports which can be used when towing. On the back panel, storage is provided for tools like the Stihl splitting axe and there’s also an EGO battery powered chain saw that are included with the trailer!

Slide out the massive galley, and you’re treated to as close as you’ll get to a professional kitchen that you can tow behind your truck (over extremely rugged terrain). All of the food prep surfaces are clad in food-grade stainless steel with stainless fasteners and food-safe adhesives and sealants. We’re getting to the point where there are just too many details to list, but the short list includes an 11,000 BTU stove, a refrigerator/freezer, and even a stainless steel Sea B-Que grill that mounts to the front of the trailer, or can be placed on a stand, or the ground. Heat is provided via an included 20lb propane tank up front so you can easily swap it out on the road.

Seriously, there’s storage everywhere. Pull out the tray above the fridge and you have a massive food storage spot that like the rear storage, can support up to 200 lbs.

Of course, no kitchen would be complete without a sink, so the EDC includes a faucet with hot and cold water provided through the impressive water system. Basically, you can filter your own water with the included filtration system, or attach to street water though the connector on the side, and hot water is offered through the LPG water heater. This also allows you to have hot showers with the removeable faucet.

All of the water supply is plumbed with PEX tubing with brass and stainless connectors, and there is a heat trace plus insulation and a heating pad under the water tank to ensure that the lines or water tank never freeze. Apparently, this is the only adventure trailer that includes all these heating elements and offers insulated door panels to keep your water and gear from freezing no matter what the weather.

But wait, there’s more! In addition to the Blu Sea electrical panel which manages all the electronics, there are twin 100A Lithium Ion deep cycle batteries, a power inverter/charger/controller, shore power connection, and and included Zamp portable solar panel. The panel is super robust and quickly unfolds to place wherever there’s sun, and stores in a hard case that slides in the back of the trailer when not in use.

#Vanlife: The Overland Access EDC might be the ultimate adventure camping trailer #Vanlife: The Overland Access EDC might be the ultimate adventure camping trailer

All of those electronics come in handy to power all the lighting – from LED strips inside each storage area, to the dome lights on all four corners or the rack, and the two massively bright Scene lights on the rear of the rack. Basically, anywhere you need to be or see around the trailer can be lit. And Terry is working on options to change the lighting color for night lighting purposes as well.

It really seems like there is storage everywhere, with all of the panels lockable (and insulated and water tight) with the same key for security and convenience. Up front, there’s additional storage, plus replaceable rock guard panels to survive the barrage of rocks from your vehicle’s rear tires. Terry claims that the EDC has the most storage of any trailer in its class and I believe him.

#Vanlife: The Overland Access EDC might be the ultimate adventure camping trailer

Up front, the draw bar is also removeable to make the trailer even shorter for easy storage in your garage.

#Vanlife: The Overland Access EDC might be the ultimate adventure camping trailer

If you haven’t figured it out by now, there is an incredible amount of detail that has gone into the design and construction of the EDC. Terry has been putting this prototype through rigorous real world testing for the past year, and because of that has preemptively countered just about any issue you could have on the open road.

What makes the EDC even more impressive is that it is currently selling for $34,500 and includes a 10 year warranty on the chassis and 5 year warranty on the body. Obviously, that’s a lot of money, but for what you’re getting it’s a steal. Production trailers will be available in five different colors of powder coated aluminum with black rock deflectors, rack risers, and wheel wells, or you can opt for the polished aluminum shown above. Currently, there is about a month and a half lead time for pre-orders. Check out the site below for more info.

So that trailing arm suspension…seems like it just sits on some sort of rubber blocks instead of any kind of spring and damper? Is that what I am seeing?

I see…looks like a Timbren axle-less suspension system.

$35k to stand out in the elements to do everything except sleep and you still have to spend $2k to buy a tent? Sounds about right for made in ‘Merica crap. “the customer should just be lucky that they sell this to them” seems to be the mentality of these companies.

Isn’t it up to the customer to determine if this meets their needs and provides value for the listed price?
Or is “merica” now forcing its citizens to buy “merica crap” regardless of want or need?

Now, if you just wanted to make use of a catchy phrase and ignorantly lump together everything made in the USA into one “crap” pile, you succeeded.

Using the guilt trip of buying something “American Made” simply because it is built here is getting very old. there are similar campers for far less or more inclusive campers for less or equal to this. so what value am i getting by buying this. if a company is using where a product is made as a selling point then they are lacking somewhere else. let the products features and benefits stand on their own.

If this exact camper was made in Mexico or Canada by an american what would it value be? If it was made in Germany would it be even better?

‘Merica!!

How are you supposed to impress your gearhead buddies with a tent? A $35,000 trailer is how you do that.

That 2500# loaded weight can’t be right. You list at least three places with 200# storage capacity and it’s 2100# empty. No max load number on their web site that I could find.

Where do you sleep? When it gets cold, wet, and windy, I want someplace to escape the weather—not a Swiss Army knife on wheels. Why not just buy a small cargo trailer with some factory installed windows. A cargo trailer holds a lot of bikes and camping gear and you can sleep in it. While you’re traveling, everything is securely locked inside and out of the weather. You can buy a new one with windows installed for about $3000 and a used one for a lot less. The inside of the trailer couId be customized anyway you want. Unlike a typical RV camper trailer, a cargo trailer can be used to haul a lot of other stuff like lumber, furniture, aplliances, etc. I used a cargo trailer for years but now I have a van. I like the van better but a cargo trailer is an inexpensive alternative.

Look at the Sylvan Sport Go Camper trailer. 1/3 the price, 1/3 the weight, still has rack space available for bikes, boats, ATVs & cargo and comes with a pop-up tent.

I’d spend the same amount or less on a small ATC toy hauler And have my bikes inside, my kitchen inside and be able to sleep inside. Sure not quite as butch but you could always add axe mounts if you really need them. Side note, pretty much all campers sold are MUSA, just saying.

Hey y’all. Thanks for the comments about the trailer and thanks to Zach for doing such a great job of getting all the details in.

I’d like to clear the air with some of your comments and if you have others please shoot them to me by email through our website if you like.

Lets see… American Made! Yes, about 80 percent of the trailer has systems and sub-systems that are made in the US. We do this for several reasons. Mostly, it supports American jobs, it happens that the components are the very best. Take for instance our inverter. We initially were going to go with a very popular inverter made in China. We were sent one by the company to field test and after about a month we broke it. We came across the 2000W Magnum Inverter that is designed and made in the the US and yes, its more expensive but it runs like a champ. Its marine grade and tough as nails. That’s what we want for the entire trailer. The cheap man pays twice and we figured out in the places where we like to ride, system failures are not an option.

The whole point of this type of trailer is to go WHEREVER and WHENEVER you want. If your towing vehicle can climb it, go over it, slosh through it, the trailer will too. A 24 ft travel trailer WON’T go where this trailer will. We go to some gnarly places in Oregon BLM areas to ride.

RAIN. The EDC comes with a Alu-Cab 270 degree wrap around awning. It covers the galley and rear storage. It has optional sides for those who want to be fully enclosed.

The Timbren Axle-less suspension system is a very well made proven system and we have put it through everything imaginable. We stand behind it.

The dry weight on the trailer is 2100 lbs for the 2018 trailer and 1950 lbs for the 2019. The 200 lbs mentioned for the storage compartments is the amount of weight they will hold fully extended, not what the weight is. The trailer pictured above weighs about 2400 lbs total. The 6 cylinder Tacoma has no problem pulling it ANYWHERE.

HOT DOG STAND. We love this one. Please read our FAQ about our glorified Hot Dog Stand on our website. http://www.overlandaccess.com/faqs/ Also, our soon to be LIVE YouTube channel will feature the day where we give away hot dogs and hamburgers on top of one of Oregons famous buttes.

Axes, Axes… The axes you see on the rear are splitting axes. The EDC comes with a battery powered chain saw. In the winter we find fallen trees and cut them into logs. The axes are then used to split the wood. They are also used as hammers for driving stakes. The hatchets are also used for making kindling.

I hope this addresses any confusion about the trailer. I look forward to hearing from all of you.

Thanks again, Zach!
