We The People combine their own BMX roots with heritage klunker mountain biking into an all-new, modern 27.5″ cruiser bike called the Avenger. WTP’s first bike that wasn’t 20″ BMX was a 24″ cruiser seventeen years ago, and they’ve never stopped having fun, riding faster & farther on big wheels. But now they mix in new mountain bike tech for a street AND trail capable ride…

WeThePeople Avenger 27.5″ BMX cruiser, modern MTB klunker

The Avenger name isn’t new for WeThePeople cruisers, but they’d always been retro in both style & at most modern 80s tech, spinning up 26″ wheels at most (outside of a single 29er prototype.) Now this new WTP Avenger/Avngr steps up to more modern mountain bike styling & detailing, with bigger wheels, better brakes, and bike trail-ready tires. Not content to ride freestyle in the streets or hit dirt jumps & pump tracks, this is WTP’s look at how much fun a classically-inspired mountain bike can be.

The new 27.5″ Avenger isn’t overly modern, sure you get the de rigueur trail wheelsize of the day (with 26mm internal & not especially tubeless-ready) and hydraulic disc brakes, but this is still a retro throwback bike at its heart. And that’s what probably make it the most fun.

The TIG-welded frame of the Avenger is full 4130 chromoly steel, as is the matching 33mm offset unicrown fork and the matching 110mm rise/790mm wide/14° backsweep cruiser bar. Even the crankset from sister brand Salt gets 4130 tubular arms, making the whole setup pretty bombproof. Even with a straightforward singlespeed build that still doesn’t equate to a lightweight, with a complete bike weight claimed at 14.88kg (32.84lb)

The frame gets a mix of classic mountain bike details, with a straight 1 1/8″ steerer, a 27.2mm seatpost, 68mm threaded bottom bracket, external brake routing, and standard 100/135mm bolt-on quick release 6-bolt hubs.

The complete bike does add in some modern alloy components to balance weight & performance, like a standard FSA headset, Shimano MT200 disc brakes, WTB Breakout 27.5 x 2.3″ tires.

WTP provides their own CNC’d alloy top-mount BMX stem, direct mount 42T alloy chainring paired to a 18T cog on the alloy WTP cassette hub, 36 spoke alloy rims, reinforced nylon flat pedals, alloy post, saddle, and Salt lock-on grips.

WTP Avenger geometry & pricing

WeThePeople keeps it simple with the BMX inspiration and a single medium/largish size for the klunker to fit a wide range of riders in an upright position. The Avenger surely isn’t a modern trail geometry bike, with a steep 70° head angle and slack 68° seat angle. Its chainstays are long at 476mm, and gets 63mm of bottom bracket drop (plus a 622mm toptube & 478mm seattube.) But remember this is a bike for cruising not massive climbing or enduro racing.

Cool bike but with disc brakes a “klunker” it is not. This is more a SS going for a retro look.

JBI does a similar bike, for half the price called the Rev MX:

Parts ain’t as good, but that’s the point of klunking. Budget bikes with COASTER brakes and a trailside beer with your buddies. Transition got it right too when they did one.

The Avenger is never design to be just a Klunker bike. Its purpose was to tackle many different types of riding styles and terrain as a fairly efficient single speed bike. The target was for off road but the funny thing is this bike also kind of strikes a cord as a fix gear or more like a single speed road bike as well. Throw on some Thick Slick tires or something like them and declare war on the streets. I have two of these rides and could use another as running three sets of different types of tires makes this bike explode as a single speed. But this ride is not an easy find so I’ll feel better leaving what left for my fellow riders. The Avenger 27.5 is still out there to buy as of today. Scan the web. Not many left. After riding these bikes for about a year, looking them over my conclusion is this ride is a deal a big deal and under priced. If you don’t think so try duplicate it one would have to turn to a custom frame builder and you’re looking at two to three thousand dollars also a several month wait. Oh and buy the way both bikes I own frame and forks/ welds are excellent. I’ll rate this one as a semi custom ride as far as a single speed. The only thing I highly recommend is to install a set of Race Face Atlas pedals on this ride in black to get the power to the grown. For the ones looking for strictly a Klunker in current production State Bike is your target . However the wheels to keep in mind are not 26” but 27.5 witch work for me but if one wants to get nit picky well you might want to re think that. The last thing to consider because I have four builds with the State Bike platform you’re going to trash the crank as the one furnished the arms work loose hands down. There will be other things you’ll want to change trust me. So in the end you’re State Klunker Bike including the the purchase of the bike will hover around 1,000 to 1,500 $ when done. So be ready big spenders. I’m really happy with the builds on the State Klunker bikes all are a bit different a truck load of fun. At least the bike is affordable at the get go and can be ridden until you decide the mods.
