Every year in Portland, Vanilla Workshop & their Speedvagen production side put together their own in-house cyclocross race team, racing some of the best looking steel bikes around. You can almost always find some interesting limited edition or small batch singlespeed setups via their Ready Made builds. But this year, as the season winds down, Speedvagen decided to make their Workshop Team-only SSCX edition available through the Ready Made program in all of its red, white & blue sparkly flat-bar glory! Oh and checkout the matching Strider balance bike for the budding cross racer too…

The RMSSCX Workshop Team edition cross bike grew out of childhood memories of Speedvagen’s Marketing Director. Growing up, bikes were a way he connected with his older brother and a white Skyway Street Beat BMX bike was permanently burned into his memory as the bike of the cool kids.

So after a first-ever season racing cross in Portland (on a single speed, of course) with new older brother figures to impart wisdom, the 2019/2020 team cross bikes got a direct callback to that Skyway. The team edition bike was then “a tribute to the big brothers, sisters, team mates, and friends” that help show you the ropes of some new branch of cycling.

“The ones that made us realize a little bit more of how the world works and influenced what we thought was cool at the time. To the people who inspire us to try new things, expand our boundaries, and of course the ones who got us out there racing, thank you!”

So with that, the Speedvagen SSCX shop team has been racing all season on these sparkly white, single speed cross bikes in both drop bar & flat bar. And now they’ve decided to officially release a very select number of the Team SSCX bikes as a part of the regular Speedvagen Ready Made offering.

The RMSSCX will be available in four stock frame sizes (S-XL) and only as a pre-configured Ready-Made complete build.

The Vanilla-made steel cyclocross frame includes a 12m rear thru-axle dropout with a replaceable derailleur hanger and an eccentric bottom bracket to support geared or singlespeed compatibility. It gets a tapered steerer with external headset and the Vanilla/Enve integrated seat mast.

The standard Ready Made singlespeed build includes a carbon Enve CX fork, Chris King  headset, Chris King R45D hubs laced to alloy HED Belgium Plus rims, a White Industries Oner EBB, Shimano XT levers to Ultegra flat mount brakes, Easton alloy cranks & chainring, Wolftooth stainless cog & GearClamp adjustable spacers, alloy flat bar, Fabric saddle & grips, black Donnelly PDX tires, and a painted-to-match alloy Pro PLT stem.

RMSSCX pricing & availability

Quantities will be limited for the Team SSCX bikes, to be made in batches of just two per size at a time. The Workshop Team SSCX bike sells for $5750 complete in the standard alloy build. There’s just a single upgrade option to a Team ENVE package (as shown here) of carbon wheels, bar & stem bringing the complete price up to $8550.

In either case, you’d need to put a $1000 deposit down to lock your spot in, with a delivery turnaround time of three-four months – so ready for racing next season. And yes, it includes that Speedvagen BMX toptube pad.

Unfortunately, that custom painted Strider looks like a one off. To get that, you’d probably have to get your toddler onto the Speedvagen Workshop Team directly!

$8550 for a single speed. Let that sink in. I don’t care that it’s VW. That’s an obscene amount of money for a simple bike.

But just a few posts ago you said you’d pay $2400 for a Hed wheel set built with DT350 hubs, which is an absurd statement in its own right… Huge side eye to you Seraph.

No need to attack others. Nobody buys high-end parts because it’s the logical, productive, thing to do.

Whatever. Seraph has a long history of call out worthy statements. No need to referee something that has nothing to do with you.

For that price the top tube pad better come with it.

I think the fork on the strider is on backward…? Or maybe it’s progressive balance bike geometry.

Seriously. A single speed.

You know, I had friends in college that would spend any amount of money they had available to obtain friends with some weird sense of prestige or status that comes with owning a name brand. They called themselves frat boys, and they were in college for the wrong reason.

I knew such vain status-chasing existed in the bike industry, but I never thought that kind of behavior would bleed this far over into the cycling world. And in such earnest! Good grief.

Oh calm down Francis. Vanilla/Speedvagen are known for the outrageous bikes with outrageous price tags for a helluva long time now. We didn’t figure this out yesterday. Thanks for the lecture, anyway.

LOL. They had to call the bottom bracket a White Industries instead of a Squid.

Kinda screams insecurity. As does spending $8500 on a pre configured SS.

Lovely paint job. But it’s a little odd that they paint “USA” on that made in China Enve fork.

This actually has “Skyway T/A” model inspired graphics. The “Skyway Street Beat” was different model. Its no big deal, but i expected someone else to point that out first.
Regarding the price, if you want it, buy it. If not, don’t buy.

Human’s like peacocks will display. That whack tail drove Darwin crazy. There was a trust-funded bike shop owner in my town but he had to get out of the retail world. When you conversed with him it was obvious every bit of sensibility about him was in tune with this kind of product. He could list many of the desirable bikes and the wait times for a buyer with luxury-lifestyle funds. Gratifying to purchase and somewhat lonely . . . isn’t that the point?
