Golden-based Spot Bikes have released updated models of their Mayhem 130 and Mayhem 150 full suspension trail bikes. These both use Spot’s Leaf Spring suspension platform; a design that has done away with traditional cartridge bearings for the main pivot, replacing them with a composite leaf-spring, named the Living Link.

The New Mayhem 130 and Mayhem 150 both receive a substantial geometry update, now longer, lower and slacker than their previous iterations. They now also offer trail side adjustable geometry, allowing the rider to slacken the head angle and drop the BB in a (claimed) less than 30 seconds. We have the full geometry details and pricing right here.

New Spot Mayhem 130

The Mayhem 130 is available in both 27.5+” and 29″ options. As it’s name suggests, it’s rear end sports 130mm travel, paired with a 140mm or 150mm fork up front.

On the geometry front, the new Mayhem 130 is much longer, boasting a 440mm reach in medium, as compared to the 424mm reach of the previous generation. Reach values now span 415mm in Small up to 490mm in XL.

A 435 mm chainstay offers tire clearance for 29 x 2.5” and 27.5 x 2.8” tires, though Spot say some 29 x 2.6” tires will fit too

Chainstays measure up at 435mm across the S-XL size range. The seat tube angle of the small frame is relatively slack at 75.5° (effective), steepening up in 0.5° increments up the size range to a steep 77° on the XL frame.

The head tube angle is consistent across the size range at a conservative 65.7° in the HI geometry mode, dropping to a slacker 65.2° in the LO geometry mode. With the HA change comes a drop in the BB height from a 31mm drop in HI, to a 39mm drop in LO.

A key feature of the Mayhem 130 is its super short seat tube length – as short as 356mm on the small frame, and 495mm on the XL. This will encourage the use of super long travel dropper posts for all riders, giving them maximum standover clearance to throw some shapes in the cockpit.

New Spot Mayhem 150

The new Spot Mayhem 150 is, as the name suggests, a 150mm rear wheel travel mountain bike, built for rather more technical terrain than the Mayhem 130. It pairs that additional travel out back with a 160mm fork up front, rolling on 29″ wheels.

The new Mayhem 150 sports a 65° head angle in HI mode, slackening to 64.5° in LO mode. The BB drops 27mm in HI mode, lowering to a drop of 36mm in LO mode. The seat tube angle is an effective 75.5° across the S-XL size range.

As we saw on the Mayhem 130, the 150mm Spot offers ultra short seat tubes too, measuring at just 400mm in medium and 450mm in large. This will allow riders to spec long droppers, and choose their frame size based on their desired reach figure.

Speaking of reach, this spans 410mm to 500mm across the S-XL size range. Chainstays measure 440mm consistent across the size range, offering clearance for 29 x 2.5″ tires, though spot reckon some 2.6″ tires work too.

Spot Mayhem 150 Details:

  • Frame Material: Carbon
  • Travel: 150mm rear, 160mm front
  • Wheel Size: 29″ only
  • Claimed weight: from 29.3 lb (13.3 kg)
  • Starting Price: $5,1999 USD

What on earth is the Living Link Leaf Spring?

living link leaf spring

Tyler explains Spot’s signature Leaf Spring suspension platform here, but here’s a brief description. The Living Link replaces traditional cartridge bearings on the main pivot for a composite leaf spring that works with the air shock to provide a very linear mid-stroke suspension curve.

In the first 25%-50% of the shock’s stroke, the leaf spring is said to “increase spring rate at the wheel to widen the sweet spot of mid stroke support”. Towards the end-stroke, a reduced spring rate at 75% travel is said to make more travel accessible on rough descents, transitioning to a stronger “ramp up” near bottom out as the leaf spring force falls away.

On the rebound side, the leaf spring is meant to reduce “pogo” experienced on big hits. In the early to mid-stroke region, the leaf spring is said to bestow more “pop” to help riders hop obstacles with ease.

Spot Mayhem Pricing & Availability

The new Spot Mayhem 130 and Spot Mayhem 150 full suspension trail bikes are available at four price points; 4-star, 5-star, 6-star XTR and 6-star AXS.
