The latest from Forkmods is a simple yet brilliant piece of kit that will save you an unknowable number of dollars on a new front wheel, or an unknowable amount of time lacing your rim to a new hub. The Forkmods 20×110 to 15×110 axle conversion kit will allow riders to fit a Boost (15x110mm) wheel into the dropouts of a 20×110 fork. Here’s more.

Who is this Forkmods conversion kit for? Primarily, those with a downhill fork that want to run their Trail/XC wheelset. Most dual-crown forks run a 20×110 thru-axle, precluding their use with most XC, Trail and Enduro wheelsets on the market. While those wheelsets run the same Boost 110mm spacing, the thru-axle is 5mm narrower.

The Forkmods conversion kit will appeal to those who wish to be economical with their setup, preferring to adapt components to what they do have, rather than opting for the expense of a new 20×110 hub or even an entirely new wheel.

The good news is that the conversion is said to take very little time and is completely reversible. Tools required are a 22mm or 7/8” socket/wrench, 22mm or 7/8” or adjustable wrench for the thread adapter, and a 6mm hex for the axle.

There are three options available for this kit based upon the axle length and thread pitch. To determine which kit is right for your fork, measure the full length of your axle from beneath the head, and make note of the thread pitch.

  • M20 x 2mm pitch – 165mm
  • M20 x 2mm pitch – 158mm
  • M20 x 1.5mm pitch – 158mm

The thru-axles that come with the conversion kit are black anodised 7075-T6 aluminium., while the external thru hole inserts and thread adapters are 6061-T6. The inner dropouts are made from hardened 17-4 PH stainless.

Once the adapters are installed, you can simply install and remove the front wheel using a 15mm thru-axle and Allen wrench as you would normally.

Pricing & Availability

The kit is still in the final stages of testing but Forkmods expect it to be available for pre-order very shortly. Price is expected to come in around the $110 (USD) mark.

Forkmods also offer road fork conversion kits, converting 15mm forks for 12mm hubs.
