While the world builds more aero carbon disc brake road bikes, Berlin’s Standert Triebwerk CR eschews trends to refine a classic and classy steel road bike. Lightweight butted Columbus steel tubing, 1 1/8″ external bearing headset, rim brakes… that doesn’t sound like the latest technology, but it does sound like the kind of timeless bike that got many of us hooked on riding road… a welcome breath of fresh air!

Standert Triebwerk CR builds a beautiful classic steel road bike

Don’t get us wrong, Standert still does disc brake road well, too. Their most recent steel Triebwerk Disc LTD road bike update with a more narrow tapered fork and room for 32mm road tires made that bike both more modern & more classic at the same time. And realistically, that’s probably the type of road bike I would prefer.

But I know there are still plenty of classic rim brake roadie holdouts. And we are truly happy to see Standert refining classic builds too. They’ve done well with limited edition rim brake road bikes before. But this one jumps back to more classy, classic standards, without leaving the most important modern technical advances behind.

Standert says, “We didn’t test it in a wind tunnel because the views in there suck. Instead, we had a lovely trip to France and rode it up the Mont Ventoux. The Triebwerk CR is made to create memories and take you places, instead of KOMs and races.”

The “Classic Rim brake” Standert Triebwerk CR was developed to mix modern steel into a timeless road bike. It is TIG-welded in Taiwan from a multi-butted mix of Columbus Spirit, Spirit HSS & XCr tubes.

Claimed frame weight is 1815g (size 56cm), plus 375g for the Columbus Futura Caliper SL carbon fork.

With a sneaky touch for the modern… the rim brake, QR dropout frameset does feature a T47 threaded bottom bracket, modular internal cable routing for 1x/2x, Di2/eTap/EPS shifting, and room for modern 28mm tires.

It does stick with a straight 1.125″ headtube, 27.2mm seatpost, and external seatpost clamp, though.

The new Triebwerk CR is available in Standert’s Berlin studio, or for sale direct from their online shop – available in five stock sizes (52-60cm) and in either salt or pepper paint jobs (white or black).

Complete bike builds will also be available now starting from 5050€ with a SRAM Force eTap AXS kit, or just 300€ more for Red 22 mechanical.

    A radially spoked, rim braked (of course) wheel is so appealing to me. Light, simple and 99% of the time more than effective enough. I hope frame manufacturers continue to offer rim brake options.

    I hope all rim-brake frame manufacturers going forward use the final evolution of the rim brake: The direct-mount caliper.

      Indeed! The only problem is economies of scale, I suspect direct mount brakes and the frame fittings for them are more expensive to make.

        I’m expecting that the holdback on using direct mount is the carbon fork – I don’t recall Columbus (or anyone?) making a fork with direct mount in a straight 1-1/8” steerer. There are some tapered steerer direct mount forks out there, I know, but fewer and fewer options in rim brake forks every month.
